  3. Emily & Adam Test Mrs. Szczurek’s Goal for your child has to pass the “Emily and Adam Test.” I will try my hardest to make your child fee safe and comfortable every day. Academically, I will set high expectations for all of the learners and strive to work with each child on their individual needs in the best learning environment.

Schedule Time Subject 8:35 Students enter the building 8:45-9:00 SEL/Opening 9:00-9:40 Specials 9:45- 11:00 Math 11:00- 11:40 Science or Social Studies 11:45- 12:35 Lunch/Recess 12:40- 2:20 Reading and Writing Workshop 2:25-3:25 Guided Reading 3:25-3:35 SEL/Closing/Dismissal Students need to arrive by 8:35 to avoid being marked tardy; Wednesdays are always a day 0 and end at 2:35pm. Please plan accordingly. The first bell rings at 8:35am please be prompt with drop off.

Reading Focus Reading Log • Electronic log (in your child’s Google drive or a paper copy if requested by the parents) to be completed at home or at school. • GOAL: • complete 15 reading responses for each month of school • use at least 10 different response choices (fiction or nonfiction choices) • all responses should be in complete sentences and give text evidence to match student claims • All work will be checked at small group guided reading time on weekly basis or at the end of the month • It is important that all students keep up with the reading and the recording of responses (NO PARENT SIGNATURES ARE REQUIRED) • SAMPLE

Vocabulary activities and games will be part of daily reading centers choices, along with Greek/Latin Root work binders.

STAR Binder PURPOSE to aid in the development of organizational skills and foster responsibility to help your child become accountable for communication between school and home to eliminate lost logins, notes, money, calendars, newsletters to keep parents and students informed of important events Please check the binder as often as possible. Your child will carry his/her assignment notebook in the STAR binder. Scholastic book orders, school handouts, trip forms etc. will be stored in the STAR binder to bring home.

Behavior • The school and the classroom rules follow the PBIS model which places emphasis on proactive approaches, direct teaching of appropriate behavior, regular practice and positive reinforcement. • In case of breaking a school/classroom rule multiple times, an email will be sent home and a student will complete a reflection sheet. • In case of a serious incident, the involved staff member will contact home via a phone call within 24 hours of the incident. • A behavior chart clip up/down and a punch card system will be used. • The class will collect “room points” to reinforce positive choices. • When the jar is filled, students will receive a class reward.

  17. Homework Students should read for about 20-30 min. each night and complete the reading log. Additional homework may go home and can be a game, a paper/pencil or an electronic task , i.e. apps, google drive or google classroom. Homework will not be assigned daily. Homework could be related to skills taught in class, unfinished work or an area a student needs more work in; not all students will have the same homework, or have homework daily. Students should also practice math facts daily. Homework will be posted on Mrs. Szczurek’s website on daily basis.

  18. Devices Students will each have 1 device to assist them in instruction. The device will go home a school provided bag to be charged. Please use only the chargers provided by the school to do this. If they do not work, please contact the school. It is the student’s responsibility to charge the device and bring it to school the following day. Try designating a common area for the charging. Each student will have an email account for school use only. The teacher will use email to share various information and documents with the students. Students should use it for school purposes only. Each student will have access to Google Drive that will be used frequently throughout the school day. The devices might not travel home with your child daily. We encourage all families to purchase device insurance.

  20. Birthdays Birthday treats are optional. Students are NOT allowed to bring in FOOD items to share with their classmates. Some options for non food treats include: stickers, pencils, bookmarks, craft kits. Please let the teacher know at least one day in advance in you plan on sending in something to be passed out to celebrate your child’s birthday.
