Guidelines & Expectations Baranoff Guidelines: Be respectful. Be responsible. Be honest. Be self-disciplined.

slide-6
SLIDE 6

Rewards and Incentives

  • Baranoff continues to employ PBS (Positive

Behavior Support) as a school-wide behavior system.

– This focuses on positive consequences (praise, rewards, etc.) before negative consequences.

  • Rewards: Marble Jar, Point Cards, Buffalo Pride

Certificates, Team Points, Golden Spoon

  • Students get rewarded for meeting Baranoff

Guidelines for Success, Class Expectations, and Cafeteria Expectations.

slide-7
SLIDE 7

Consequences

  • “Lates” Result from:

– Unsigned BDR/Reading log/Thursday Folder – Incomplete homework – Not having materials ready for class

  • The number of “lates” in a 9-

week period affects the “Completes Homework in a Timely Manner” personal development grade on the report card. (See Green sheet in packet for specifics.)

  • “Names” Result from:

– Disrespectful behavior – Not following directions – Not meeting expectations, including hall and cafeteria rules – Any unsafe behavior

  • The number of “names” in a

9-week period affects the personal development grade on the report card. (See green sheet in packet for specifics.)

Third Grade Curriculum

Schedule, Material, and other good things.

AISD Curriculum

Curriculum Road Maps (CRMs)

  • All lessons are based on the TEKS (Texas

Essential Knowledge and Skills) – TEKS serve as a guide for what we teach – The CRMs guide the timing for when we teach each objective.

  • At Baranoff, we follow the CRMs ; there

may be some differences in the CRM Yearly Overview and the timing we have, but we still cover everything outlined within the 9-week period.

slide-10
SLIDE 10

Math Curriculum

  • Investigations + enVision
  • Each lesson begins with a “hook” to connect to

students’ prior knowledge, then moves into new material.

  • We still use a lot of hands-on manipulatives and then

translate that to how it looks as written work.

  • This year, we focus a lot on problem-solving and

using math in everyday situations.

  • Mastering math facts for all four operations is

HIGHLY essential and will be a focus both in class and at home.

slide-11
SLIDE 11

Math Grading & Homework

  • Grading Policy

– Daily practice will be assessed, not graded – Periodic assessments throughout the unit will be graded (once we feel students have had enough practice) – Tests at the end of each unit will be entered into the grade book twice (Students will have a study guide.) – Home Math Facts Report: Weekly grades will be averaged together and entered as a test grade.

  • Homework

– Students will practice math facts nightly – Homework will reinforce the ideas learned in class. – Homework will NOT be graded, unless it is unfinished class work.

  • The R/M Log will count

as a grade since it is an

  • ngoing project.
slide-12
SLIDE 12

Language Arts Curriculum

  • Reading

– Students will be doing in-depth analysis of different genres: fiction, non-fiction, biographies, fantasies, etc. – Students will be learning how to make inferences, describe characters, decipher vocabulary words… altogether learn the traits of a good reader. – Later in the year, we will start doing chapter book studies and book groups in class. – Our goal this year is to build endurance as well as gain comfort in writing about our reading.

  • Writing

– Half of our writing instruction is the technicalities: grammar, punctuation, capitalization, etc. – We also do Writer’s Workshop, where students will pace themselves and get familiar with the writing process, not just the end result. – We write in a variety of genres, including (but not limited to) memoir, instructional, fantasy, poems, biography

slide-13
SLIDE 13

Language Arts Grading & Homework

  • Reading/Writing:

– Grades come from quizzes

  • r activities that assess

each skill taught – There will be no reading tests, but projects will be counted as test grades. – Grades come from quizzes to assess the grammatical part of our writing lessons. – Spelling tests will be graded weekly. – Written compositions will be graded on each part of the writing process: Pre- Writing, Drafting, Revising/Editing, Publishing

  • Homework

– Weekly spelling homework – Students might be asked to finish written compositions at home if not finished in class. – Home Reading Log: weekly grades are averaged and entered as a test grade. – Periodic book reports – Chapter reviews – Skill practice

slide-14
SLIDE 14

Spelling

  • Spelling contracts go home on the last day of every week

and are due back on the following Friday.

  • Spelling quiz is on Friday.
  • The week’s homework is outlined on the first page.
  • Students are free to do their homework any night of the

week, as long as they take their practice test on Thursday.

  • Spelling words are based on “rules” that govern the

spelling patterns. Each week will focus on a new rule.

slide-18
SLIDE 18

Homework

  • Students will have some homework every week:

spelling contract, reading/math log, and BDR signatures.

  • Suggestions for homework procedures:

– Set a designated time for your child to work on their homework – Make sure it is a quiet place with limited distractions – If your child has tried his/her hardest and cannot finish the homework, send a note or leave a message with your teacher and we will reteach the material and give extra time for the assignment with no penalty. However, I must be able to see that the student has actually tried to complete the assignment.

Other Fun Things…

  • Snacks:

– Please send a healthy snack with your child that can be eaten in about 10 minutes.

  • Water Bottles:

– Please send only water in your child’s water bottle – Also, please make sure lids are on tightly! A leaking water bottle in the backpack causes more damage than you might guess!

  • Dismissal:

– If there are any changes in your child’s dismissal plans for the day, please let your teacher know in writing! – Please also call and leave a message so we know where to send your child; our planning time is in the morning and we may not get a chance to check our email before dismissal time.

slide-25
SLIDE 25

Dress Code

  • Please wear closed toe tennis shoes daily.
  • Feel free to keep a light jacket in the classroom
slide-26
SLIDE 26

Dismissal

  • Our campus has now reached over 1,000 students! In order

to help us safely get students home, please remember the following tips: – Socialize off campus rather than in the pickup circle – Please keep kids off of the wall by our wing – Please don’t meet students in between the annex and the main building- too many bus students to accommodate in that area. – - “Parent pickup” clarification… by the annex? Or in front of the school?
