My Shepherd Will Supply My Need | CW 374

slide-3
SLIDE 3

My shepherd will supply my need Jehovah is his name. In pastures fresh he makes me feed Beside the living stream. He brings my wand’ring spirit back When I forsake his ways And leads me, for his mercy’s sake, In paths of truth and grace.

SLIDE 4

Opening Rite

Based on select Scripture passages with shepherd imagery

slide-5
SLIDE 5

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

slide-6
SLIDE 6

We all have gone astray like sheep. Each of us has turned to his own way, but the Lord has charged all our guilt to him.

slide-7
SLIDE 7

Like a shepherd he will care for his flock. With his arm he will gather the lambs. He will lift them up on his lap.

slide-8
SLIDE 8

He will stand and shepherd with the strength

  • f the Lord, in the majesty of the name of

the Lord his God. They will dwell securely, for at that time he will be great to the ends of the earth.

slide-9
SLIDE 9

The Lamb at the center of the throne will be their shepherd. He will lead them to springs of living water. And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.

slide-10
SLIDE 10

Then we your people, the flock of your pasture, will praise you forever. From generation to generation we will recount your praise.

slide-11
SLIDE 11

Christ is Risen! He is Risen Indeed! Alleluia!

Confession of Sins

How blessed is the person whose rebellion is forgiven, whose sin is covered. Psalm 32:1

slide-13
SLIDE 13

Holy God, gracious Father, I am sinful by nature and have sinned against you in my thoughts, words, and actions. I have not loved you with my whole heart; I have not loved others as I should. I deserve your punishment both now and forever. But Jesus, my Savior, paid for my sins with his innocent suffering and death. Trusting in him, I pray: God, have mercy on me, a sinner.

Glory Be to God

Gloria in Excelsis

slide-15
SLIDE 15

All glory be to God on high Who has our race befriended! To us no harm shall now come nigh, The strife at last is ended; God showeth his goodwill to men, And peace shall dwell on earth again; O thank him for his goodness!

Prayer of the Day

The Collect

slide-17
SLIDE 17

O Lord Jesus Christ, you are the Good Shepherd who laid down your life for the sheep. Lead us now to the still waters of your life-giving Word that we may abide in your Father’s house forevermore; for you live and reign with him and the Holy Spirit,

  • ne God, now and forever.

Amen.

First Lesson

Acts 6:1-9; 7:2a, 51-60

slide-19
SLIDE 19

In those days, as the number of disciples was increasing, a complaint arose from the Greek-speaking Jews against the Hebrew-speaking Jews, because their widows were being overlooked in the daily distribution of food.

2So the Twelve called together the whole group of disciples and said,

“It is not right for us to neglect the word of God in order to wait on

  • tables. 3Brothers, carefully select from among you seven men with

good reputations, who are full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom. We will put them in charge of this service. 4But we will devote ourselves to prayer and the ministry of the word.”

slide-20
SLIDE 20

5This proposal pleased the entire group. They chose Stephen, a

man full of faith and the Holy Spirit, also Philip, Procorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicholas, a proselyte from Antioch.

6 They had these men stand before the apostles, who prayed

and laid their hands on them.

7The word of God kept on spreading, and the number of

disciples in Jerusalem increased greatly. Also a large group of priests became obedient to the faith.

slide-21
SLIDE 21

8Now Stephen, full of grace and power, was doing great wonders and

miraculous signs among the people. 9Some men who were from what is called the Synagogue of the Freedmen (Cyrenians, Alexandrians, and some from Cilicia and Asia) rose up and disputed with Stephen.

2Stephen said, “Gentlemen, brothers and fathers, listen! 51“You stiff-necked people, with uncircumcised hearts and ears! You

always resist the Holy Spirit! You are doing just what your fathers

  • did. 52Which of the prophets did your fathers not persecute? They

killed those who prophesied the coming of the Righteous One, and now you have become his betrayers and murderers— 53you who received the law as transmitted by angels, but did not keep it.”

slide-22
SLIDE 22

54 When they heard these things, they were furious and

gnashed their teeth at him. 55But Stephen, full of the Holy Spirit, gazed up into heaven and saw the glory of God and Jesus standing at the right hand of God. 56 He said, “Look, I see heaven opened, and the Son of Man standing at the right hand

  • f God.”

57But they screamed at the top of their voices, covered their

ears, and rushed at him with one purpose in mind. 58 They threw him out of the city and stoned him. The witnesses laid their cloaks at the feet of a young man named Saul.

slide-23
SLIDE 23

59While they were stoning Stephen, he called out, “Lord

Jesus, receive my spirit!” 60Then he fell to his knees and cried out in a loud voice, “Lord, do not hold this sin against them.” After he said this, he fell asleep. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God!

SLIDE 24

Psalm of the Day

Psalm 23

slide-25
SLIDE 25

1 The Lord is my shepherd.

I lack nothing.

2 He causes me to lie down in green pastures.

He leads me beside quiet waters.

3 He restores my soul.

He guides me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.

slide-26
SLIDE 26

4 Even though I walk

through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me. Your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

slide-27
SLIDE 27

5 You set a table for me

in the presence of my foes. You drench my head with oil. My cup is overflowing.

6 Surely goodness and mercy

will pursue me all the days of my life, and I will live in the house of the Lord forever.

slide-28
SLIDE 28

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, As it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.

slide-29
SLIDE 29

Second Lesson

1 Peter 1:3-9

slide-30
SLIDE 30

19For this is favorable: if a person endures sorrows

while suffering unjustly because he is conscious of

  • God. 20For what credit is it to you if you receive a

beating for sinning and patiently endure it? But if you suffer for doing good and endure it, this is favorable with God.

slide-31
SLIDE 31

21 Indeed, you were called to do this, because Christ also suffered for you,

leaving you an example so that you would follow in his steps. 22 He did not commit a sin, and no deceit was found in his mouth. 23 When he was insulted, he did not insult in return. When he suffered, he made no

  • threats. Instead, he entrusted himself to him who judges justly. 24 He

himself carried our sins in his body on the tree so that we would be dead to sins and alive to righteousness. By his wounds you were healed. 25 For you were like sheep going astray, but you are now returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God!

slide-32
SLIDE 32

Gospel Lesson

John 20:19-31

slide-33
SLIDE 33

“Amen, Amen, I tell you: Anyone who does not enter the sheep pen by the door, but climbs in by some other way, is a thief and a

  • robber. 2The one who enters by the door is the

shepherd of the sheep. 3The doorkeeper

  • pens the door for him, and the sheep listen

to his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.

slide-34
SLIDE 34

4When he has brought out all his own sheep, he

walks ahead of them. The sheep follow him because they know his voice. 5They will never follow a stranger, but will run away from him, because they do not know the voice of strangers.” 6Jesus used this illustration in speaking to the people, but they did not understand what he was telling them.

slide-35
SLIDE 35

7So Jesus said again, “Amen, Amen, I tell you: I am

the door for the sheep. 8All who came before me were thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them. 9I am the door. Whoever enters through me will be saved. He will come in and go

  • ut, and find pasture.
slide-36
SLIDE 36

10“A thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came

that they may have life and have it abundantly.

11“I am the Good Shepherd. The Good Shepherd lays

down his life for the sheep. The Gospel of our Lord. Praise be to you, O Christ!

Sermon Hymn

The King of Love My Shepherd Is | CW 375

slide-38
SLIDE 38

The King of love my shepherd is, Whose goodness fails me never; I nothing lack if I am his, And he is mine forever.

slide-39
SLIDE 39

Confused and foolish oft I strayed, But yet in love he sought me And on his shoulder gently laid And home, rejoicing, brought me.

slide-40
SLIDE 40

And so through all the length of days Your goodness fails me never. Good Shepherd, may I sing your praise Within your house forever!

Our Confession of Faith

slide-43
SLIDE 43

I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

slide-44
SLIDE 44

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was

  • buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again

from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.

slide-45
SLIDE 45

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Prayer of the Church

I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people. 1 Timothy 2:1

slide-49
SLIDE 49

Jesus, Good Shepherd and Gate for your sheep, continue to give us life, that we may enjoy it to the full. Lord our Shepherd, in you we lack nothing. We will fear no evil, for you are with us.

slide-50
SLIDE 50

We all, like sheep, have gone astray, but you have borne the iniquity of us all by laying down your

  • life. Teach us to know your voice, that we may

follow you closely, enter your gate and be saved. Lord our Shepherd, in you we lack nothing. We will fear no evil, for you are with us.

slide-51
SLIDE 51

Open the gate of your fold to other sheep. Call them also to be fed in the green pastures of your Word and refreshed with the quiet waters of your baptismal grace. Lord our Shepherd, in you we lack nothing. We will fear no evil, for you are with us.

slide-52
SLIDE 52

Bless the gatekeepers who shepherd your people with you, those who teach the young, who lead your people in worship and praise, and those who minister to the aged, sick and dying. Strengthen them with the love of your people, and through their work add to the number

  • f those who are being saved.

Lord our Shepherd, in you we lack nothing. We will fear no evil, for you are with us.

slide-53
SLIDE 53

Shepherd and Overseer of souls, return the wandering, the lost and the doubting to you. Restore their souls and guide them again to your right paths. Lord our Shepherd, in you we lack nothing. We will fear no evil, for you are with us.

slide-54
SLIDE 54

With the compassion of a Shepherd, walk with those who go through the darkest valleys of life, sickness, despair, and even the shadow of death. With your Word, remind them of your presence and take away their fears. Lord our Shepherd, in you we lack nothing. We will fear no evil, for you are with us.

slide-55
SLIDE 55

Lord our Shepherd, in your kindness give us all good

  • things. Fill us with your overflowing cup, and bring us to

dwell with you in your house, where you live and reign, now and forever. Amen.

slide-56
SLIDE 56

Our Father, who art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in

  • heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; And forgive us
  • ur trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against

us; And lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from

  • evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the

glory forever and ever. Amen.

slide-57
SLIDE 57

O God, Shepherd of all your people, deliver us from all troubles, worries and cares that assail us, that we may always do what is pleasing in your sight, and remain safe in the care of our Good Shepherd; Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The peace of Christ be with you

slide-59

My Shepherd Will Supply My Need | CW 374

slide-62
SLIDE 62

When I walk through the shades of death, His presence is my stay; One word of his supporting breath Drives all my fears away. His hand, in sight of all my foes, Will still my table spread; My cup with blessings overflows; His oil anoints my head.

slide-63
SLIDE 63

The sure provisions of my God Attend me all my days; Oh, may his house be my abode And all my work be praise. There would I find a settled rest While others go and come, No more a stranger or a guest But like a child at home.
