College Admission Testing

ACT- English, Math, Reading , Science, Optional Writing test To register for the ACT: www.actstudent.org SAT

  • SAT: Math, Critical Reading., Optional Writing test

Optional -Subject tests

To register for the SAT: sat.org/register

  • Students should take each test at least once and then focus on the one that is better

suited to them

  • All colleges and universities will take either the ACT or SAT
  • Check with schools to learn exact testing requirements. Do they require the writing

portion or SAT Subject tests?

  • Have ACT/SAT send scores directly to the schools of your choice. Most schools are

interested in the highest scores. Send all of your test scores so they can see all of the subscores.

  • OU and OSU have residual tests available, but you may only take it once.

  • Students should visit several institutions (public and private, large & small)

during typical days – not just on a game day!

  • Visit a class, a professor, dorms rooms, financial aid, and student center.
  • Ask questions!!!
  • Talk to other students.
  • Rate each visit, listing likes and dislikes,
  • Students need to take the lead in speaking with

professors and admission counselors.

Admission Terminology

Early Decision – apply early (usually November 1) and receive notification of acceptance prior to Winter Break. If accepted you must go to this school.

Early Action – apply early (usually November 1) and receive notification of acceptance prior to Winter Break. Acceptance is not binding.

Regular Decision – applications usually due prior to February 1 and receive notification in the spring.

Rolling Admission – admission process in which school review applications as they are received and notifies applicants after decision.

Scholarship Deadlines may be different than application deadlines.

When to apply - the earlier, the better!

Don’t apply to more than 6 schools.

First, create a resume. Quality is more important than quantity.

Applications are online . You can access the college applications through Naviance or by going to the schools’ website.

READ! Re-READ!! Carefully read all instructions prior to completing your application! Once you submit application, you cannot resubmit it.

  • Check deadline dates - What is application deadline?

What is scholarship deadline

  • Is scholarship application separate
  • Are teacher or counselor recommendations required?
  • Testing requirements
  • Essays Requirements – Take time writing and rewriting essays.

Don’t stress about “what are they wanting”

Let them know who you are.

 Request transcripts

through your Naviance account.

 Your transcript will have the “Best”, “Last” and “Best

 You should have your scores sent directly to your

schools from ACT and SAT. Many schools require that

test scores be sent directly from ACT and SAT.

 Oklahoma schools on Common App: OU, TU, OK City Univ.  Check for supplements, deadlines and admission fees of

 You have to match your Common App and Naviance.

Teacher and Counselor Recommendations

  • Find out how many teacher recommendations you
  • need. Don’t ask for more than you need or ask

teachers “just in case”.

  • Speak with your teachers and Mrs. Nassar as soon

as possible to request a recommendation.

days to prepare a letter of recommendation.

  • Complete Information for Recommendations survey

Additional Scholarships

 OKPROMISE (OHLAP) – Students must enroll by the end

  • f sophomore year and qualify based on family income.

Students must complete a core curriculum and maintain a minimum GPA. Students and parents are responsible for tracking the requirements.

 NCAA – register with NCAA Clearinghouse at

www.eligibilitycenter.org. Requirements are different than graduation requirements. Students and parents should begin tracking these requirements as early as 9th grade by going to www.CoreCourseGPA.com Online classes do NOT count for NCAA.

 State Regents Scholarship - Students scoring at or

above the 99.5 percentile on the ACT or SAT. Qualifying score is released in November – usually around 34 ACT

Notification of Admissions and Financial Aid

 Set up student accounts for each college that admits you  Student Aid Report (SAR) should arrive shortly after FAFSA is completed.  Compare financial aid award letters from different schools.  Decide which college to attend and notify all colleges of your decision by May 1.

You’re at college! Now what??

 Go to Class!!  Get to know professors.  Get involved in at least 2 activities. Consider

social, special interest, academic and professional organizations, but don’t over do it.

 Take advantage of study abroad and

internship and research opportunities.

 Remember – where ever you end up, it is up

to you to take advantage of the opportunity!

 Let your child be the driving force  Emphasis allocating time to the process and staying

 Set up a regular time to meet and discuss the process.  Don’t write essays or complete applications for your

student

they are the one going to college

 Be upfront and honest with children about what is

affordable.
