RAG - what is it ?

  • All students should aim for 100% attendance.
  • Our minimum target for attendance is 95%-

students who achieve this will be ‘green’ students.

  • Students between 90-94.99% are ‘Amber’ and

should be encouraged to improve.

  • Students on less than 90% attendance are

‘red’ and have targeted intervention as they will be seen as ‘Persistent Absentees.’

Practice makes permanent

Retrieval Practice involves practising remembering things you already know. It must be remembering, not recognition. Retrieval Practice activities usually have the following 3 parts:

  • 1. They involve you trying hard to remember something;
  • 2. You record or use what you can remember;
  • 3. You check if what you remembered was correct and note what

you forgot.

Homework

  • At least half of homework will be based on retrieval practice and other

revision based activities.

  • Homework will usually be set in the first half of a lesson.
  • Students record their homework and the day it is due in their journal.
  • Students will be given guidance on how long to spend on each homework

task and what is expected.

  • Students will usually be given at least one week (5 school days) to complete

the homework.

  • To be successful, homework must be completed and handed in on time.

Tri-Weekly Assessments (TWAs)

  • Low stakes, high educational value.
  • TWAs take place every 3 weeks. This ensures they:
  • are relevant to current teaching and learning;
  • can be used immediately to inform the delivery of lessons;
  • pinpoints students’ strengths and weaknesses in a timely manner.
  • A response is set following a Tri-Weekly Assessment, designed to

address errors and misconceptions.

How can I support my child?

  • Please encourage your child to start their retrieval early – there

is a lot of content to learn in Science!

  • They can use Educake to set themselves questions on any topic

in Science.

  • Ask them plenty of questions about what they’ve been learning
  • Encourage them to try their best in each of the topics- the goal is

to develop a love of learning science, not to move sets. Science Clinic is held every Wednesday and Thursday @ 3:45- 4:30pm in S9 This provides students with homework support, help with retrieval practice or just a quiet place to study with the option of help from a Science teacher. Science Club is held every Tuesday @ 3:45- 4:30pm in S3 This provides a chance to take part in experiments not normally covered in the curriculum.
