STS Webinar Training

  • Who works with the Cardiac, Thoracic or Congenital registry data uploading?
  • Who has already participated in any of the 3 registry STS webinars?
  • Who is not receiving the STS emails below?

Dear Data Managers, Surgeons, and Vendors, We are really pleased with the extraordinary turnout for the first in our series of monthly webinars designed to keep you informed of the latest updates and new features that will be included with the next generation STS National Database that will launch in January 2020. Recordings from the first webinars are available online now. Discussion topics included a status report on what you can expect during the phase 1 launch, the transition to IQVIA as the Society’s new data warehouse, and a preview of the educational sessions at last week’s AQO Meeting. The November webinars will cover the data warehouse transition to IQVIA. Mark your calendars! Adult Cardiac Surgery Database Webinar: November 6, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. CT Congenital Heart Surgery Database Webinar: November 7, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. CT General Thoracic Surgery Database Webinar: November 13, 2019 at 1:30 p.m. CT Registration is not required for the webinars, but you will need to sign in with your name and email address to participate and ask questions.

STS Webinar Training (c (continued)

STS is currently sending webinar reminders to all: Surgeons, back up data contacts and primary data contact. If your listed as any of those roles then you should be receiving the emails. If you are listed in those roles and not receiving the email notices then you should:

  • Make sure STSDB@STS.org is white listed, since these emails tend to get sent to spam
  • Ensure STS has the correct email listed. Emails can be updated on the participant contact

form via https://www.sts.org/registries-research-center/sts-national-database/sts-national- database-forms

  • Past webinar recordings and upcoming webinars will be listed on the following link to the

webinars https://www.sts.org/registries-research-center/sts-national-database/sts- national-database-webinars.

STS Thoracic (c (continued)

Lymph Node Counts - Area of Confusion

  • Per STS – more clarification to come in training manual.
  • Node fragments – Differentiating node fragments from separate lymph nodes is a very

difficult problem. Ideally the surgeon will count lymph nodes during the case and create a system to label specimens with the count as they leave the OR. This will permit the pathologist to report the actual lymph node count during the case in the path

  • report. If the pathologist cannot, they will often report “lymph node fragments” which

implies they cannot provide a lymph node count. In this circumstance, we have to conservatively assume that all those fragments come from a single node. If they report 10 fragments from station 7, one station 7 lymph node is the count. Please encourage your surgeons to develop a way of counting nodes in the case that can be conveyed in the pathology report.

about the work needed to get this information but do the best you can.

Cath/PCI Open Discussion

  • Version 4 is now retired. You can no longer resubmit any data prior to

4-1-2018.

  • High Sensitivity Troponin – If you use this it is normally reported in

ng/L (liters). NCDR wants the ng/mL (which is 1000 to 1). If your lab reports High Sensitivity Troponin <6, then value as 5 otherwise rounding will make it 0.

  • Are there any specific questions on the Cath/PCI version 5 form or

upload submission? Do you want to share your pain, suffering and knowledge?

slide-59
SLIDE 59

Cath/PCI Open Discussion (c (continued)

  • NCDR is trying to link Cath/PCI Data to CMS Data for 30 day mortality

– If your not sending most PHI, not sure what they will do.

  • Cath/PCI bleeding complication reduction – Big shift from PCI femoral

to radial. Projecting large savings on overnight stays due to less bleeding complications. Push to same day elective PCI’s.

  • New NCDR dashboard reporting released for version 5, looks really

nice!

slide-60
SLIDE 60

MACDM Closing

  • Would anyone like to volunteer to present one registry. I will help you with creating presentation and

the presentation itself?

  • Do we want a registry vender presentation (Lumedx, etc)
  • Any future topics would you like to hear for fall/spring meeting?
  • Any additional registry to discuss, specific fields discussion and process improvement?
  • AHA New Web Site and report review project. We could partner with Ohio data managers and do

web ex’s to come up with any AHA GWTG site/report suggestions.

  • Thanks again Lehigh Valley Hospital for hosting this meeting!
  • Watch MACDM.org for meeting pictures and minutes to be announced!
  • Please drop lanyard and name tag in container in rear of room when you leave
