  2.  Registration information is used to schedule courses and employ teachers for next year  Careful consideration should be given when selecting courses  Once course selections have been submitted, students are only permitted one change  After the last day of this school year, changes will only be made to correct scheduling errors and equalize class sizes Registration Cont’d

  3.  Professional staff are important for providing guidance, information and resources, however ultimate responsibility falls with students and their parents  Make course selections based on interest, ability, endorsement choice, post-graduation educational plans, and future career goals  Read the Course Description 9 th Grade Supplement carefully before making any course selections

  4.  Required load for 9 th grade students is Seven credit- generating courses each semester  No double-blocked classes  Ninth Grade Campus runs a 7 period, schedule (students attend 7 classes per day)

  5.  Open enrollment allows for any student who has interest in a more challenging approach to prepare for college to enroll in Pre-AP or AP level courses. However, students must pass the corresponding STAAR assessment to enroll in a Pre-AP Course.  Pre-AP courses are designed to prepare students for AP courses and are designed for self-disciplined, highly motivated students.  Excellent attendance and good organizational skills are preferable to predict success Pre-AP Cont’d

  6.  Must assume responsibility for a considerable amount of out-of-class reading/homework and have well-developed reading, writing and/or math skills  May require summer reading and/or assignments on which students are tested when school begins  GT students are served through Pre-AP and AP courses at the secondary level Pre-AP Cont’d Pre-AP Cont’d

  7.  May only change from Pre-AP/AP to on-level course AFTER developing and completing an Academic Action Plan  Requires a meeting with the teacher to develop a plan to take the steps necessary to put forth a good faith effort to be successful in the course  May be required to make up all required topics prior to the schedule change  Grades earned while in the PAP/AP course will transfer with the student if the course is dropped  PAP/AP courses best prepare students to be successful in college and make them more competitive in being accepted to the college of their choice.  Pre-AP courses earn added weight to their grade point average.   8.  Colleges look at 3 things when considering admissions  Performance of College Entrance Exams (SAT, ACT)  Courses taken (did you take a rigorous load during high school)  Class Rank/GPA  Challenge yourself, but take careful consideration not to overload  Consider extracurricular load when selecting Pre-AP/AP courses  Consider waiting to take foreign language  Consider the difference between Pre-AP in middle school versus high school

  9.  One credit of Physical Education is required for graduation in the state of Texas.  Students may satisfy credit by taking P .E courses or through acceptable substitutions:  Athletics, Marching Band (fall only), Color Guard (fall only), Cheerleading (fall only), Drill Team (fall only), Athletic Training (application required)  No more than 4 credits may be earned through any combination of P .E courses and allowable substitutions

  10.  Students entering Grade 9 after 2011-2012 must meet the state requirements on the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR) End of Course Exams (EOC) to receive a diploma from a Texas public high school  Series of 5 EOC exams will be taken throughout the first three years of high school (English I & II, Algebra I, Biology, US History)  9 th grade students will participate in EOCs in English I, Algebra I, and Biology I if enrolled in those courses

  11.  Students will be permitted to take an examination to earn credit for an academic course for which the student has no prior instruction  Ex: Spanish I  Students must register with the Counselor and take the examination based on an established calendar (see AMS counselor for more information)  A score of 80% is necessary to receive credit by exam without prior instruction

  12.  Students should follow the timeline provided each year in preparation for College  Grade 8 & 9  Attend Freshman Orientation (tonight)  Meet with a counselor or advisor to plan course selections for high school (January 30 & February 1)  Participate in a Personal Graduation Plan Meeting to complete a 4-Year Plan (Early Spring of 9 th grade)

  14.  Endorsements  STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math)  Business & Industry  Public Services  Arts & Humanities  Multidisciplinary Studies Each endorsement has specific requirements regarding the number of courses and/or credits required within the endorsement cluster – READ Pages 15-20 for details! There are many pathways offered within each endorsement!

  15.  Course offering section provides a list of all the courses available to students at Daniel Ninth Grade Campus next year.  Freshman students are somewhat limited in their choices  Supplement provides only the courses that are available to 9 th grade students  Many freshman prefer to get required courses out of the way during their first year in high school * For a full listing and descriptions of all courses offered at AHS, see the AHS Course Description Book on the AHS website.

  16.  Each course has a detailed description to assist students in appropriate course selection  English Language Arts  Mathematics  Suggested Course Sequence Choices  Science  Suggested Course Sequence Choices  Social Studies, Fine Arts, CTE, etc. to follow

  17.  Review course options with parents at home and get advice regarding PAP/AP courses from current teachers  Access online resources as needed  Tonight’s Presentation, Course Description Book, etc.  Make preliminary Endorsement selection on Course Selection Form  Hold on to your Course Selection Form for online registration  Return to teacher by Tuesday, February 4, 2020

  18.  Complete the Registration online at your convenience  https://txcnt03.esc11.net/aledomyzone/Login.aspx  Must be completed by Monday, February 3, 2020  A Help Desk will be available at DNG Library (Tuesday, January 28 th & Thursday, January 30 th from 4:00-7:00pm)  Course Selections will be sent home during the spring semester for review  Schedule changes may be requested up until the last day of instruction this year.
