 Professional staff are important for providing guidance,

information and resources, however ultimate responsibility falls with students and their parents

 Make course selections based on interest, ability,

endorsement choice, post-graduation educational plans, and future career goals

 Read the Course Description 9th Grade Supplement

carefully before making any course selections

slide-4
SLIDE 4

 Required load for 9th grade students is Seven credit-

 Open enrollment allows for any student who has interest

in a more challenging approach to prepare for college to enroll in Pre-AP or AP level courses. However, students must pass the corresponding STAAR assessment to enroll in a Pre-AP Course.

 Pre-AP courses are designed to prepare students for AP

courses and are designed for self-disciplined, highly motivated students.

 Excellent attendance and good organizational skills are

preferable to predict success

SLIDE 6

 Must assume responsibility for a considerable amount of

  • ut-of-class reading/homework and have well-developed

reading, writing and/or math skills

 May require summer reading and/or assignments on

which students are tested when school begins

 GT students are served through Pre-AP and AP courses at

the secondary level

Pre-AP Cont’d Pre-AP Cont’d

slide-7

 May only change from Pre-AP/AP to on-level course AFTER

developing and completing an Academic Action Plan

 Requires a meeting with the teacher to develop a plan to take the steps necessary to

put forth a good faith effort to be successful in the course

 May be required to make up all required topics prior to the schedule change  Grades earned while in the PAP/AP course will transfer with the student if the

course is dropped

 PAP/AP courses best prepare students to be successful in

college and make them more competitive in being accepted to the college of their choice.

 Pre-AP courses earn added weight to their grade point

average.

 Colleges look at 3 things when considering admissions

 Performance of College Entrance Exams (SAT, ACT)  Courses taken (did you take a rigorous load during high school)  Class Rank/GPA

 Challenge yourself, but take careful consideration not to

  • verload

 Consider extracurricular load when selecting Pre-AP/AP courses  Consider waiting to take foreign language  Consider the difference between Pre-AP in middle school versus high

school
