We know people value their local spaces, and we want to develop a clear picture of the community benefits of public parks as well as who is using them, how often and for what?" Key fa facts ts There are an estimated 27,000 public parks in Britain Local authorities have no statutory duty to fund and maintain public parks A 2014 report by the Heritage Lottery Fund found 86 per cent of parks managers had seen cuts to their budgets since 2010 An estimated 2.6bn visits are made to public parks each year

We are waiting now on Barnet Council to commission a feasibility study and to understand how they will lease

  • ut a piece of Highway!

In a report for the council, the planning officer said Mr Candy's team had supplied a survey from 1834 which provided 'beyond reasonable doubt' that the garden was part of the original layout. Mr Candy's separate plans to knock together seven Regency homes on that road to create a 15-bedroom 50,000sq ft mega- mansion - said to be worth £200million when completed - have already been approved Objectors said removing one road lane would cause congestion, reduce safety for cyclists and joggers and result in a loss of public space. The billionaire took out a 150-year lease on the stretch of private road in Regent’s Park – Total cost of “Pocket” Garden £26.5m – covers 200ft

Benefits of Car Clubs

Transport for London’s (TfL) ‘Road Task Force Report’ (RTF) estimated that: Congestion costs London’s economy £4bn per year. Poor air quality from road based transport is leading to an estimated 4,200 premature deaths per year. London’s population is forecast to grow 14% during the period 2011-2021, which could outweigh the relative decline in car ownership & usage in London witnessed over the past decade. The Road Task Force Report identified car clubs as a means to improve air quality and reduce congestion.

Car clubs have eight principal benefits:

Modal Shift: Car clubs alongside public transport, walking and cycling, provide an attractive mix of mobility services to promote a shift from private car use. Accessibility: Car clubs in areas where there are fewer public transport or alternative mode options provide access to services and opportunities. Air Quality: Car club cars are more efficient than private cars, especially where electric cars are employed. Reducing congestion: through reduced car ownership. Improving air quality: by reducing the number of private vehicles on the road and by switching from traditional internal combustion engine cars to electrically powered vehicles. More efficient/flexible use of space: by better road space management. Reduced need for commercial fleets: as companies can utilise car club vehicles rather than having to purchase their own fleet. (N.B. there were only 7 benefits listed in Council’s Report)

NIMR – FURTHER COMMENTS

  • “A magnificent building and landmark is going to be destroyed into a residential scheme.
  • The Ridgeway at rush hour/school time is far too busy as it is this will far increase congestion

and traffic

  • This will further add to pollution within a beautiful spot in Mill Hill Village.
  • Where will all the inhabitants park”
  • “The Thameslink train service from Mill Hill Broadway is already hugely over crowded; the

Northern line from Mill Hill East is infrequent and there is only 1 bus serving this site. This development should not go ahead before improved transport infra structure.”

  • “There need to be double the amount of parking spaces provided i.e. about 1000. With in

excess of 500 inhabitants plus office, leisure space and cafe, it would be impossible to find parking spaces outside in the adjoining streets. Already there are huge problems in the Ridgeway and top of Burtonhole Lane at school times. Public transport is not good enough in the area for people not to have cars. Also it would be discriminating against disabled people who cannot manage public transport and rely on their cars.
