Before European powers traded in slavery with the African countries, there existed many affluent and powerful kingdoms who took part in slavery. However, their methods of slavery were different to the slavery which involved European powers. Many societies in Africa with kings and hierarchical forms
- f government traditionally kept slaves. But these
were mostly used for domestic purposes. Today, we are going to learn about some of these countries.

Egyptian civilisation was already over 2000 years old by the time the city of Rome was built. We might be shocked to think of slavery today, but in the time of ancient Egypt is was a common practice in many cultures and countries. Some of the slaves in Egypt were the poor of Egypt who had to sell their children into slavery. Other slaves were brought in from other countries when they won battles and wars or were the result of being sold into slavery by the people from other countries.

Slaves were very important in ancient Egypt as a big part of the labor force, but they were also used for many other purposes. Many slaves were house servants, gardeners, farm labor, musicians and dancers of excellent talent, scribes (those that kept written documents), and accountants.

The Kingdom of Benin The kingdom of Benin began in the 900s when the Edo
people settled in the rainforests of West Africa. To start with Benin, was ruled by kings called Ogisos but by the 1100s there were struggles for power and the Ogisos lost control of their kingdom. The Edo people feared that their country would fall into chaos, so they asked their neighbour, the King of Ife, for
- help. The king sent his son Prince Oranmiyan to restore
peace to the Edo kingdom. Oranmiyan chose his son Eweka to be the first Oba of Benin.

What was life like in Benin?
The most important person in the kingdom was the king, known as the Oba. Hundreds of men and women lived at the royal court, and devoted their lives to looking after the Oba and his family. Some people at court had very special jobs, working as acrobats, sorcerers or leopard hunters, all in honour of the king. Most people in the countryside worked as farmers but there were also potters and blacksmiths. They made simple pots, weapons and tools for the villagers. The people of Benin believed that their Oba was a god. Everyone had to show great respect to the Oba. People approached him on their knees and nobody could look at him without his permission.

In East Africa, slave trade was well established before the Europeans arrived on the scene. It was driven by the sultanates from the Middle East. African slaves ended up as sailors in Persia, pearl divers in the Gulf, soldiers in the Omani army and workers on the salt pans of Mesopotamia (modern Iraq). Many people were domestic slaves, working in rich households. Arab traders began to settle among the Africans of the coast, resulting in the emergence of a people and culture known as Swahili. In the second half of the 18th century, the slave trade expanded and became more organised. There was also a huge demand for ivory, and slaves were used as porters to carry it.
