  10. • Communication is important for the success of your children. • Some ways we will be communicating are: – Communication folders – School website – PTA Facebook: Waller Mill Elementary School PTA – Twitter: @Principal_Thop – E-mail (Staff email addresses follow this guideline: thopkins@ycsd.york.va.us) – Monday Message – Conferences 11

  11. • Buses load/unload at the front entrance. Be sure not to park in the bus loading zone during arrival & dismissal times. • Car riders are dropped off & picked up at the gym entrance. • School doors open at 8:45am . • Please have your child at school in time for them to be in their classroom by 8:55am . • Any change in transportation needs to be made in writing and given to your child’s teacher as early as possible . Changes should be made prior to 3pm. 12

  12. • We are appreciative of everyone’s positivity as we transition from car line to parent pick-up. • If your child will be parent pick-up every day , you will be assigned a number. Parents, please have your number visible when you enter the building. If you forget your number, you will need to go to the main office to sign your student out. • We recommend that you sign up for a number if you will be parent pick-up occasionally as well. • Parent pick-up is located in the gym. The only office dismissals will be for students leaving school early. 13

  15.    Be A STAR! 16

  16. 17

  17. Incorporating STAR behavior at home: Tip #1- Use positive wording  Instead of “Stop yelling”, Try “Use your inside voice”.  Instead of “Don’t run in the store”, Try “You must walk in the store”.  Instead of “No throwing the ball in the house”, Try “You can only throw the ball outside”. 18

  18. Tip #2- Be a Teacher When you have to say No, give a reason Why. For example, while shopping, your child asks you to buy him a toy. You know how many toys he already has, and you are short on time. You tell your child, “No, we can’t buy that toy today because you already have a toy in the car that you can play with on the way home.” If your child accepts your answer, compliment him, saying something like “Thank you for being respectful and understanding that we can’t buy a new toy today.” 19

  19. Tip #3- Acknowledge appropriate behavior Use positive reinforcement to teach your children which actions/behaviors are expected, accepted, or desired. Figure out what kinds of acknowledgements your child will be motivated by. Ask them what they would enjoy doing (not necessarily having)! Create a special “reward” basket or box of toys or items that you already own but that your child only gets to play with or use when they have done what was expected. Create a visual recognition system, such as a sticker chart. For example, list your child’s weekly chores and use a sticker to mark when each one is completed. At the end of the week, if all chores are completed according to expectation, give a reward. 20

  22. Kindergarten Standards-based Report Card Back-to-School Night 2019
