Walking Football Project – Achieving our Goals !!!

  • lder adults – men and women
  • Improve self-confidence, low self-

esteem and morale

  • Engage 50+ adults over 50 in physical

activity with positive benefits for their well-being

An established club with a great reputation – members can’t wait until next Saturday !

  • Every Saturday morning since January 2013
  • Started with 3 men and now there are 57 members registered:

– Average attendance is 28 each week

  • Members pay £2 per week
  • The programme is now 1.5 hours and based on:

– 15 minutes warm up with gentle exercise – 4 x 15 minute games in teams of 7 – 10 minutes cool down at the end.

  • Volunteers now run sessions and take warm up
  • Sponsorship for strips and equipment from:

– Steelite International – Giving back to the community – Audley Butchers – C.Silcock Plumbers – CTC Physiotherapy – Slicedbread

  • Healthy network of clubs with tournament 4 – 5 times per year; Over 300 clubs in England!
  • Members also attend Stoke City Community Walking Football on Thursdays

One of the Chesterton regulars is George Jackson, a former professional with Stoke City. He played 12 times for the club, including a man-of-the-match performance against a Manchester United side that included the legendary trio of George Best, Bobby Charlton and Denis Law. Soon after, he snapped a cruciate ligament which brought an early end to his promising career.

As a 73 year old with a serious heart condition, retired electrician Keith Salmon thought his football playing days were well behind him. He had to give up five-a-side games in his 50s when the pace became too much, and he’d grown used to taking it easy. “If I wasn’t doing this then ’d be sitting around at home reading the paper or watching the television, being bone idle,” he said.
