Presentation Castleisland Milestone

It was celebrations all round in Presentation Castleisland as the school enjoyed success on the double over the May Bank Holiday Weekend. On the Bank Holiday Monday the schools’ fjrst year team won the National Plate competition in UL after 6 tough games over a two day period. The team had already won the prestigious Coakley Cup in December 2015 and to end the season with a national title was an added bonus. The following day, the Junior A squad made the long journey to the National Arena in Tallaght to take on Scoil Chriost Ri Portlaoise in the National semi-fjnal. This was going to be a major task as the Portlaoise School has an all-girls enrolment

  • f over 900 girls. After a titanic struggle in an exciting game

where the lead changed hands many times, the local girls pulled away in the fourth quarter to win 37-28. The fjnal was fjxed for one hour later against Mercy Mounthawk . The Tralee girls had beaten Pres. Killarney 58-42 in their semi-

  • fjnal. The stage

was set for a local derby in a repeat

  • f

the South West regional

  • fjnal. Mounthawk

raced into an early 8-2 lead but some good work from Brid Moriarty and Joyce O Connor restored parity and the quarter ended 14-11 in the Islanders favour. By half-time the lead had been extended to ten points with some very good team defence and nice baskets by Orla O Sullivan and Millie Luck. However, by the middle of the fourth quarter the lead was down to 2. Enter Emma O Regan from the bench to score two quick baskets. A steal by Kayla O Connor lead to her being fouled as she took her lay-up. Kayla made one

  • f her free throws. Further good baskets from Brid Moriarty

and Joyce O Connor saw Pres. Castleisland close out the game on a score of 39-30. The Junior A girls were immensely proud

  • f

their achievement in winning a 20th national title for the school since 1994. Coach John Enright was delighted with the team saying “it wasn’t easy, and we didn’t want it to be easy, we had the hardest qualifying pool and a tough semi-fjnal and fjnal but

  • ur hard work, ability and preparation saw us through in the
  • end. It was a glorious end to 3 days of excellent basketball

with the girls learning that nothing comes easy and hard work pays off in the long run. I’m looking forward to the challenges next season brings already!”

On Thursday 12th May four GAA legends and two Munster rugby players visited our school for what turned out to be a day for the history books. They included: 10 time All-Ireland winner and probably the greatest hurler of all-time, Henry Sheffmin; former All-Ireland winning Tipperary manager Liam Sheedy, four time All-Ireland winning Kerry footballer Killian Young and Cork dual star and All-Ireland winning footballer Aidan Walsh were the four GAA legends. Mark Chisholm and Jordan Coghlan were the two Munster rugby players who also attended.

Skills Masterclass

Killian and Aidan took fjfty girls up to the Castleisland Desmonds pitch for a skills masterclass from 9.15 am to 10.30 am. The two former young footballers of the year put the girls through their paces and demonstrated a variety of skills and techniques which the girls can bring to their own game.

Motivational Talks

Once the footballing masterclass concluded all participants returned to St. Johns hall for the eagerly anticipated arrival of the remain two legends, Henry Sheffmin and Liam Sheedy who were both giving the entire faculty a motivational talk each. A Kaleidoscope

  • f colour welcomed all four stars as they entered the
  • hall. This guard of honour was provided by members
  • f the school bank and the student council, each

displaying the county colours of each of the stars.

Munster Players Visit

Later that afternoon the school has treated by the visit of Jordan Coghlan and Mark Chisholm from the Munster rugby team. Both players also received a warm welcome and gave an insight into the life of a professional sports star. Jordan spoke of the transition from one rival club to another as he made a recent move from Leinster to Munster. Mark spoke of the need for a healthy lifestyle and for a work-life balance. He too, like Henry had an unsuccessful start to his career but through hard-work and a clear focus on your goal anything is possible. Again both legends stayed on for photos with the admiring audience. The ‘Meet Our Legends’ event was an action-packed, fun-fjlled, selfje-crazed day. One that will live long in the memory for sure! The day has been captured on video for posterity – please see the link via our new website http://presentationcastleisland.ie.

‘Meet Our Legends’ Event

One-by-one the legends were called to the stage, each receiving a rapturous welcome, which fjlled the hall with a cacophony of sound that almost lifted the

  • roof. Henry spoke of determination, dedication and

that it is never too late to follow your dream. Liam spoke of the need to follow your passion, whether it is sport or in life. ‘If you have a passion for what you do, you will always enjoy doing it’, Liam said. All four legends signed autographs and posed for photos with all present.

3 The awards evening celebrated and recognised the many talented students who in a wide variety of activities - academic, sporting, music, and scientifjc enquiry, spiritual and emotional development - dedicate themselves to achieving their best. Our students have an amazing capacity for friendship, care of one another for supporting and nurturing each

celebrate and give due recognition to its students that the whole school community gathered on May 19th for the school’s inaugural Awards Evening. The evening acknowledged the passionate, committed students as well as the humble and compassionate. It was without doubt an evening in Presentation School which credited those who daily live the values of our school to promote the good of all – creating the rich diverse community that is Presentation Castleisland. Over the course of the evening, awards were presented for a vast array of fjelds that demonstrated the many educational strands to the School, including Art and Design, Spirit of the School and consistent hard work. Local writer Tommy Frank O’Connor unveiled the new student yearbook and praised those behind it for contributing what was a piece of history in the making. The evening ended with an inspirational input from surprise guest, Joanne O’Riordan. She reminded the classes that nothing was “undreamable” and the only
