Our History
- The Sisters of St. Joseph came to Hamilton
in 1854
- Working in railway sheds near the Hamilton
harbour, they risked their lives to care for the sick and poor
- In 1890 the Sisters moved closer to their vision of a modern and
progressive system of health care with the opening of a 25-bed hospital located on John Street.
- Today, St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton has three campuses, a
staff of more than 4,000 and over 650 beds
- Over the course of 150 years of advances, the clinicians and
staff at St. Josephs Healthcare remember their history and their motto forever remains, It is an honour to serve our community.
Our Identity
We are a Catholic hospital, owned and operated by the St. Joseph's Health System and committed to carrying out the healing mission of Jesus Christ. We are a university teaching hospital, affiliated with the Faculty of Health Sciences, McMaster University. We are dedicated to providing compassionate, sensitive care to our patients and their families and to achieving excellence in health care through our on-going commitment to education and research.

Our Expectations of Volunteers
- Volunteers must be 15 years old (18 at West 5th
Campus)
- You will commit a minimum of 50 hours
- Attend a minimum of one two hour shift each
week
- You will maintain regular attendance and be
punctual
- You will arrive in uniform and have a
professional appearance

Uniforms, Badges & Benefits
- Uniform and badge must be worn at all times
while on duty.
- There are three options for uniforms.
– Cost ranges from $20 - $30
- ID badges are provided at no cost.
- Volunteers receive free parking and drinks.

Placement depends on a few factors:

Our goals are: – To help comfort patients/clients – To assist throughout the hospital, including clinics and research – everywhere! – To raise funds to provide equipment for diagnosis, treatment and care
Volunteers at St. Joe’s
What do Volunteers do?
Direct Patient Support – Volunteers work directly with patients to provide support and assistance. Volunteers may provide:
- one-on-one visitsmeal-time assistance (tray set up
and menu completion)
- activity programs – Bingo, Yoga, Music, Crafts
- working with seniors to reduce delirium and
depression
- various other duties on inpatient units
What do Volunteers do?
Indirect Patient Support – Patients and visitors appreciate the support of our volunteers at various entrances and in a variety of clinics. These volunteers assist with: wayfinding and escorting patients and families around the hospital providing instructions, reassurance and navigational support at the entrances to clinics and programs
What do Volunteers do?
Retail Services – Volunteers support the day- to-day operations of a variety of retail outlets, including our Gift Shop, Convenience Store and Nevada ticket sales.
What do Volunteers do?
Research – St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton is currently doing research in:
- clinical science
- mental health (including the Brain-Body Institute)
- Nephrology
- respirology (Firestone Institute for Respiratory Health)
- virology
Research is also performed in the areas of biostatistics, evaluative medicine, nursing, physiotherapy, women's health, and more.

- If you are under 18, you
parents must sign for you to volunteer
Reference Letters
- You must have two
references and one must be professional.
- No references will be
accepted from family members.
- You can submit a written
letter of reference if it is no more than 5 years
- ld, but you need to
staple it to this form.
Communicable Disease Record
- Ensure that you include
your name, date of birth and phone number
- Your healthcare
practitioner must complete ALL fields for the TB testing. The results must be indicated in “mm induration”

- For your MMR you must provide one
- f the following:
- Proof of 2 dates of immunization
- Lab report from blood work
confirming you are immune
- For your Varicella you must provide
- ne of the following:
- Sign off from your doctor that
they have a record of past episode of Chicken Pox/Shingles
- Proof of 2 dates of immunization
- Lab report from blood work
confirming you are immune
