  4. 11/13/12 ¡ First S rst Serie ies o s of St f Strikes s  Denied power politically , Labor sought to bring about social change with a series of five strikes against some of the largest companies in the area in 1902.  Labor backed P .W. Clement for governor against Fletcher Proctor. A compromise candidate, John McCullough was selected by the legislature when there was no majority during the election. Rutland M d Mayo ayoral E l Elect ction 1904 n 1904  Democrats & Republicans were divided over temperance.  Issue = full prohibition (Proctors) or local choice (Clements)  Labor Party appealed to the workers & immigrants & first Labor Party mayor was elected in 1904.  Republican elites united & elected a marble company executive as mayor in 1905. 4 ¡

  5. 11/13/12 ¡ Atte tempt at U mpt at Unionizat ation i n in 1904 n 1904 John Fitzgerald of the International Mable Workers’ Union proposed contract to local marble company owners. o 9 Hour workday with 1 hour break. o Double time for extra hours. o Elimination of contract work. o Daily wages based on occupations. o Weekly paychecks. o Standard apprenticeships. Workers St rs Strike i e in 1904 n 1904 Fitzgerald accused the Proctors of a system of “slavery” . Workers voted to strike. Over time they became restless as union promises were not met. 5 ¡

  6. 11/13/12 ¡ VMC Po C Position o n on St n Strike e  VMC employed 2,500 & only 325 were on strike.  Company didn’t throw strikers out of their company housing, and in a short time half of them returned to work. VMC Po C Position o n on St n Strike e  Advantages of working for VMC: o Low rent for company housing. o Company provided medical & death insurance. o Free hospital care. o Low prices in company stores. 6 ¡

  7. 11/13/12 ¡ VMC Po C Position o n on St n Strike e  Union organizers were outsiders.  Local workers had filed no complaints against the company.  Most strikers were Italian stonecutters who feared being “blacklisted” if they didn’t strike.  In September 1904, strike collapsed and workers returned to the job. Pro rocto ctors i rs in B n Business & Po s & Politics s  They felt strong civic responsibility.  VMC paid better wages than most companies.  Despite being largest marble company VMC was concerned with its workers. 7 ¡

  8. 11/13/12 ¡ Afte termat ath o h of St f Strike e  VMC had held its ground against striking workers, even maintaining an increase in pay to non-strikers.  Strikers returned to company housing as long as they paid current and back amounts owed within one year.  VMC took back strikers where they were needed, but did not lay off replacement workers. End o d of “ f “Kindly F y Feudalism” m”  This was a period of bitter labor conflict nationwide, mostly over labor’s right to organize.  There were 4,720 strikes across the country in 1937 .  Mutual respect between the company and worker broke down. 8 ¡

  9. 11/13/12 ¡ End o d of “ f “Kindly F y Feudalism” m”  VMC management took a corporate rather than paternalistic perspective & took a hard line with workers.  Workers hope to return to work & help shape public dialogue with legislation did not materialize. End o d of “ f “Kindly F y Feudalism” m”  The cost of containment was the suppression of labor’s voice in the public & political dialogue, which continues today in Rutland County , where county representatives often have corporate rather than worker thinking. 9 ¡
