  • 1. Organization

 Organizers The tournament of the 1st International Handball Games of amateur athletes is organized by ICAS Greece in cooperation with ICAS World, and under the auspices of the Municipality of Veria.  Support The project of organizing the FILIPPOS 2018 Handball Championships has the full support of volunteers, athletes and other social partners. The games of 2018 will be the first world handball games of amateur athletes of a yearly series.  Team’s rule of participation – Competition plan – Match rules and regulations Team’s rule of participation Men: In men’s teams, players must be aged 35 + (year of birth 1983 or earlier, regardless of date of birth). Men’s teams may have 2 players 30 + but not active in any club of any rank (year of birth 1988 or earlier, regardless of date of birth). Women: In women’s teams, players must be aged 33 + (year of birth 1985 or earlier, regardless of date of birth). Women’s teams may have in their ranks up to 3 players aged 25 +, but not active in any club of any rank (year of birth 1993 or earlier, regardless of date of birth). A minimum of 8 players registered per team is required. There is no upper limit for player registration for each team. Competition plan* The first phase of the competition will be played in a single round-robin group system (all play all in each group). In case of 2 groups, the two best teams of each group, will intersect and play semifinals (1st A vs 2nd B, 1st B vs 2nd A). In case of 4 groups, 1st placed teams from groups A, B, C, D, will play semifinals ( 1st A vs 1st C , 1st B vs 1st D). Semifinals’ winners will play finals, losers will play a placement match. *Competition plan and number of groups, will be finalized according to the participants. Match rules and regulations Men: 1x25 minutes, 1 timeout for each team, time can be stopped in the last 2 minutes of the game by referee's decision only. Women: 1x20 minutes, 1 timeout for each team, time can be stopped in the last minute of the game by referee's decision only.

  • A group match win gets the winning team 2 pts, a draw gets both playing teams 1 pt.

  • In the event of a tie result in the knockout stage of the competition (semifinals, finals and the

placement match), a “best of 3 rounds” penalty shootout will take place. If at the end of these three rounds the teams have scored an equal number of successful shots, additional rounds of

  • ne shot each will be used until the tie is broken (sudden death).
  • All players participating in the tournament are allowed to play for 1 team only. In the case of

exceptional circumstances at the request of some individuals or teams of participants, only the tournament organizing committee, can make a different decision.

  • In the case of a direct red card for a sports player offense, the player is automatically suspended

for the following match. In case of a second direct red card to the same player, the player will be disqualified for the next 3 games. In the case of obtaining a direct red card for unsportsmanlike conduct or serious violations, the player will be automatically disqualified from the tournament.

  • “2min. suspensions” will have a 1 minute effect (60 seconds), due to less total playtime.
  • In the case of team shirt colors similarity, guest team in that match must provide t - shirts of

another color, or at least distinctive bookmarks. Prizes: All participating teams will receive letters of appreciation for participating in the

  • tournament. 1st, 2nd and 3rd teams in both competition categories will receive medals (gold,

silver, bronze). Also in both competition categories, first scorers, best goalkeepers and best players will get

  • rewards. All participants will get a T shirt with tournament marks.
  • 2. Dates and Place

  • 3. The city

Veria is a city in northern Greece, located 511 kilometres (318 miles) north of the capital Athens and 73 km (45 mi) west-southwest of Thessalonica. Veria was an important possession for Philip II of Macedon (father

  • f Alexander the Great) and later for the Romans.

  • a. Climate

Veria has a humid subtropical climate (Köppen climate classification Cfa) that borders on a cold semi-arid climate (Köppen climate classification BSk). Since the city lies in a transitional climatic zone, its climate displays characteristics of continental, semi-arid and subtropical/Mediterranean climates.

  • b. History

The city is reputed to have been named by its mythical creator Beres - Pheres or from the daughter of the king of Berroia who is the thought to be the son of Macedon. The Ancient Macedonians made it their second most important city after Pella. Part of the Kingdom of Macedon, it surrendered to Rome in 168. The Apostle Paul and his companion Silas preached to the Jewish and Greek communities of the city in AD 50/51 or 54/55.

  • c. Culture – Leisure – Recreation

Handball Veria is home to many sports clubs. Most prominent is the handball team of Veria, competing in the first national division and which has won many championships (both national and international) over the last 40

  • years. Veria is called «Mother of the Handball in Greece» and has active amateur teams.

Library Veria has one of the largest public libraries in Greece. Originally a small single-room library with limited funds and material, it expanded into a four-story building offering multimedia, as well as special and rare

  • editions. Veria's public library collaborates with many international organizations and hosts several cultural

events.

  • Vergina (http://whc.unesco.org/en/list/780), the city of Aigai, the ancient first capital of the Kingdom of

Macedonia, which was discovered in the 19th century near. The most important remains are the monumental palace, lavishly decorated with mosaics and painted stuccoes and the burial ground with more than 300 tumuli, some of which date from the 11th century B.C. One of the royal tombs in the Great Tumulus is identified as that of King Philip II, who conquered all the Greek cities, paving the ancient tombs way for his son Alexander the Great and the expansion of the Hellenistic world. Vergina to Pella in the 5th Century BC and was in effect the capital of Greece. Many people come here to see the exceptional mosaics discovered in the remains of houses and public buildings. The museum is

  • ne of Greece's best on-site archaeology museums with a display of pottery, jewellery and mosaics

found at the site. The remains of the buildings have impressed archaeologists and led them to believe that the Macedonians enjoyed a high level of wealth.

  • Thessaloniki or Salonica, is the second-largest city in Greece, with 1,2 million inhabitants in

its metropolitan area. Thessaloniki is a popular tourist destination in Greece. In 2013, National Geographic Magazine included Thessaloniki in its top tourist destinations worldwide, while in 2014 Financial Times FDI magazine (Foreign Direct Investments) declared Thessaloniki as the best mid- sized European city of the future for human capital and lifestyle. Among street photographers, the center of Thessaloniki is also considered the most popular destination for street photography in Greece.

  • 5. Entertainments

Veria is the capital of the Imathia province, near Thessaloniki, a gorgeous city that has a lot to offer to the visitor. Veria is right next to the archaeological site of Vergina (Philip II and Alexander the Great) and many historical monasteries, not to mention that the town is a site by itself! The town has two museums, an Archaeological and a Byzantine period one, both very interesting. You may also visit the Podium of Apostle Paul, the old Metropolis church of Veria as well as the Hebrew

  • Synagogue. Veria offers a large variety on the departments of entertainment and food. The local

gastronomy is quite rich, the dishes delicious and all of authentic Greek tradition. The area is also famous for its wines. Cultural events Veria is well-known for its significant cultural activities throughout the year. Concerts, music, theater performances, shows, exhibitions and various other cultural activities give a strong artistic color to the city’s daily life with a significant participation of both residents and visitors. At the same days with the tournament, in Veria city we run: “Veria, fine-cultural city”: A music festival in which, musicians and artists, from many parts of Greece, wander in the city, outdoor events, such as exhibitions and demonstrations. Pieria Beaches There are at least 16 reasons that make Pieria’s 16 beaches unrivalled (40 minutes from Veria). The length of the sea front, the abundant, golden sand, the quality of the water, the unrepeatable combination of coastline and mountainous massifs, changes in landscape, easy road and rail access, facilities for small craft, the alternation between quiet and cosmopolitan life, the diversity of flora and fauna, hotel infrastructure, the range of cuisine and entertainment, the wealth of sporting activities available, countless sites of cultural and ecological interest, well organized shopping facilities and the range of towns dotted along the coast. Mount Olympus Olympus was notable in Greek mythology as the home of the Greek gods. Mount Olympus is also noted for its very rich flora, with several species. It has been a National Park, the first in Greece, since 1938. It is also a World Biosphere Reserve.

  • 6. How to get to Veria City

Option 1 Arrive at Thessaloniki Airport (SKG). From Thessaloniki Airport take the Urban Bus to either Rail Station or Bus Station (ticket price 1€) and:

  • a. Take the train to Veria (45 minutes, ticket price 4€)
  • b. Take the Bus to Veria (45 minutes, ticket price 7,4€ or 10,5€ for round trip)

Option 2 From Thessaloniki Airport take the Bus which is arranged by ICAS GREECE in cooperation with tourist agencies (has to be prearranged, contact Mr Elias Tsoutsoplides bellow or info@icasgreece.com ) Option 3 If you come by car or bus, take the Egnatia Highway (Thessaloniki-Igoumenitsa) exit Veria (45 minutes from Thessaloniki)
