Preparation on the first CPA

Dec 5, 2017 2

We put the first CPA together including the HV, field shaping strips and profiles only to discover that the lifting brackets that go over the joints would not fit with the profiles

  • n. Doing this vertically was

painful

  • Tom has modified the old

brackets so they will work on the B type CPAs

  • Argonne is making a set new

lifting brackets for CPA C

Lifting the CPA

Dec 5, 2017 3

  • Goal is to minimize the time required to have riggers lifting
  • The first CPA we used a dolly but on the second CPA we used a set
  • f wheels attached to the bottom of the FC hinge this worked well
  • The G10 bar has been modified on both the top and the bottom so

it rotates freely and allows us to align with the hanger easily.

Field Cages-Hinges

Dec 5, 2017 4

Numerous changes should be made to the field cage procedure to simplify the lifting process

  • The hinges on all of the field cages

were not checked for tightness. CHECK

  • Make some sort of gauge so the

hinges are set to the correct distance and parallel so the pins lined up better

  • When placing pin, do not use the

crane to pull/twist the hinge into

  • place. Start by using a tapered bar
  • n one side slow and steady,

minimize using too much force.

  • Vic is sending nylon lock nuts to

cover the end of the hinge bolts

Lifting the field cage

Dec 5, 2017 5

Several modifications here:

  • On both the top and bottom Field

Cage we need to make a nice lifting bar so we minimize back strain by using 3-4 people

  • Remove the last few cross bars
  • n the sub-frame so they do not

interfere with the location of the wheels-Kevin said we can do this

  • On the bottom FC the plate was

reversed so the wheel gives better clearance as shown in drawing-they were upside down

  • On the first bottom FC we had the

lifting plates on the inside on the second on the outside-Always on the inside-Check

Alignment attaching Top/Bottom

Dec 5, 2017 6

Again several modifications which Argonne will fix before the next CPA

  • The lifting bar on the bottom fixture

hit up against the bolt heads on the ground plane. DONE at CERN

  • The bracket mounted to the top FC

needs to be narrower. The FR4 frame hits on it and did not allow us to get in place without lots of force- Argonne is making these, but we can hand round the corner at CERN

  • Drawing shows 3/8” bolts, holes

are ½” needed better washers and longer bolts-Vic is sending

No Clearance

General Comments

  • There were too many people in the cleanroom, extremely difficult to

maneuver the man-lift, constantly telling people to and get out from under where we were working. Next time we need to JUST STOP and remove unneeded personnel

  • We were rushing too much to stick to the schedule, better planning to

eliminate the need for riggers to stand and wait will help

  • Too much extra stuff in the cleanroom, need to purge tables, storage

(PD test box), chairs, etc. made it difficult to maneuver the two tables and sub-frames

  • Access to the turn table was hard with field cages on, we had trouble

getting the wheels over the lip

  • CRITICAL that you put C-Clamps on the CPA before rotation, it

appears that you can still lose at least one wheel. It is easy to do and eliminates the issue

  • The cleanroom is a pig sty we need to do a much better job. Some

trash bins outside will help. Before we move in the APA we should remove all of the CPA tools and store them in wheeled lockers so we can move them back in when we need them

Status of CPA#2 Parts

Dec 5, 2017 8

What we need:

  • I can’t find the ½” by 3” pins for

installing the center support to the CPA as shown on drawing DUNE-1-1-C

  • We need the Diffuser for CPA-B2

and a drawing to install them

  • Kevin said he can cut the

shoulder bolts for the G10 Bar Is there any reason we can’t build B3 first? We will have the tables and the crates in the SAS by the end of the day Monday

  • Modified Lifting Plates
  • Modified FC standoff with slots

(we had 4 but need 8)

  • Kevin, Francesca and I

discussed removing the end few pieces of 8020 on the FC frames so they are not in the way of the wheels-No Problem
