This Talk

  • You've just heard about updates to the

simulation of scintillation light in DUNE and SBND.

  • This talk will give a quick update on the

hardware side:

– towards foil installation in SBND. – status in DUNE.

Foils in SBND

  • Wavelength-shifter

covered reflector foils placed on the cathode will improve uniformity and light collection efficiency.

  • UK-proposed and led

activity.

  • Production of

components now complete.

  • Installation in CPA in the

spring.

Foils

  • 0.032” (~0.8 mm) thick FR4 (resin-

impregnated fibreglass)

  • The reflector foils are produced by

laminating 3M DF2000MA (~99% reflectivity) onto both sides of the FR4 (38 μm).

  • 64 plates are required (4 per CPA

window).

  • TPB Evaporations split between

Manchester and Brazil.

  • Principle: TPB wavelength-shifts

VUV light, which is then reflected and can be detected by PMTs.

Towards DUNE

  • The main questions are:

– Compatibility with the HV system. – Sensitivity of light detectors (ARAPUCA/X-

ARAPUCA) to visible light.

– Need to understand engineering and installation

procedures (work being performed by the HV consortium).

Clark Griffith, Sussex Surface resistivity also ridiculously high. (Y. Ramachers, Warwick)

How to mount foils

  • n the CPA
  • The goal is to minimize the impact on the CPA construction. The reflector

foils could be implemented post CPA production.

  • Current solution is to maintain the current CPA design, and include a set
  • f attachment holes on each CPA resistive panel to allow the installation
  • f reflector foils in smaller tiles on both sides of the CPA surfaces in the

UG cleanroom.

Effect of foils

Assuming 2.5% ARAPUCA efficiency. Applying measured transmittance of TPB coated glass Keeping 50%

  • f detectors not

covered in WLS to improve uniformity. (not best case scenario) Assuming 80% cathode coverage (potentially conservative)

Tests at CERN test stand (Foil – CPA, HV Compatibility)

  • First run of CERN 50 l dewar in

December with full non-perforated foil.

  • Look for discharges and space-charge

effects.

  • Plan to repeat with perforated foil and

PEN soon.

Conclusions

  • SBND foil production complete. Installation in

a few months.

  • Foils on cathode are one of the options

considered by the DUNE PDS consortium (photon collection boosters) and are in TDR.

  • UK groups involved in DUNE PD Consortium:

Edinburgh, Manchester, Sussex, Warwick.

  • R&D to develop mounting method in DUNE
  • ngoing.
  • Lots of places to get involved.
