  14. Recent VA/DOD Extramural Grants USF received a $1.57M DoD grant for translational research on traumatic brain • injury (TBI) to improve quality of life for veterans. With $2.1M from the US Army , USF Health’s College of Nursing is conducting • studies on PTSD , including research to improve emotional health and quality of life for veterans with disabilities. Hearing loss – USF’s Global Center for Hearing & Speech Research is researching • veterans’ speech and hearing with funding from the VA and Haley Hospital. The DoD awarded USF $715,000 to study the usefulness of three different • prosthetic feet . This research may offer the possibility of allowing soldiers to return to active duty after losing a leg below the knee. A $700,000 US Army grant is funding a robotic human upper body model to • predict functional motions of upper extremity prostheses , analyzing movements during various activities of daily living along with recreational activities like golf and baseball. TBTI - Timeline • October 2011: – 21 resident and affiliate companies – 27 offices and 6.5 labs – Vacancies: 2 offices, 4.5 labs • Increasing demand for offices  Idea to convert • April 2012: – 24 resident and affiliate companies – Addition of critical lab equipment – Vacancies: 2 labs – TBTI renovations  43 offices, 4 labs with 2 offices per lab included and privacy between labs • 5 offices being built are earmarked (Center for Transformation & Innovation) • BioFlorida
