In September 2015, UN Member States adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development ("Transforming our World"). The 2030 Agenda is a plan of action for people, planet and prosperity and applies to both developed and developing countries. The centre piece of the 2030 Agenda is the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), with 169 targets, adopted by 193 UN member states. The 17 SDGs reflect economic, social and environmental dimensions of sustainable development.

- Sustainable Development Goals National Implementation Plan
2018-2020, published April 2018.
- The Plan indicated a coordinated whole-of-Government approach to
implement the SDGs, - set out in the SDG Policy Map, Appendix II.

Government Policy - 2
Department of Climate Action and Environment has direct policy engagement with 9 of the SDGs. Minister also has overall responsibility for ensuring coherent implementation of the SDGs across Government. .

SDG Stakeholder Forum
- Forum established in June 2018. Terms of Reference finalised January 2019.
- Forum allows a unique opportunity for policy makers, civil society, business and
- ther interested parties to come together on SDG related activities. To-date key
speakers, include, An Taoiseach, David Donoghue, various Ministers, key stakeholder groups.
- Forum is an Open invitation to all interested parties. Attendance
between 160-280 at the meetings.
- Five meetings held to-date, next Forum is on 18th December at the
Conference Centre, Dublin Castle. SDG2 Zero Hunger.
- You are all invited to attend.

Ireland’s Voluntary National Review
- In July 2018, at the UN High Level Political Forum, Ireland presented its
First Voluntary National Review (VNR), on the implementation of the SDGs.
- Provided a comprehensive overview of Ireland’s progress towards
meeting each of the 17 SDGs.
- Established a baseline for Ireland’s future SDG reporting.
- Next VNR due in July 2022.

- 2019 Call for expressions of interest launched.
- 76 applications received.
- Evaluation criteria- National Profile- Existing Sustainable Practices
- Short-listing with other Departments through the IDWG
- Minister appointed 12 Organisations in September 2019 for a12 month
- period. Carlow County Council included.

Next Steps
- The next National Implementation Plan will be published in Q4 2020.
- Significant Stakeholder Consultation planned.
- A progress report on SDG activities will also be published in late 2020.
- SDG Champions Programme- regional, community focus.
- September marks the 5th Anniversary of the SDGs, major event planned.
- A specific National SDG Youth Forum will be established
and will meet from 2020 onwards.

Summary and Conclusion
- Progress since April 2018 on SDG activity at a Government policy level.
Climate Action Plan, Single use plastics ban.
- Government Departments, through policies and engagement with
Stakeholders and the SDG Champions demonstrates that Ireland means business in the implementation of the SDGs.
- Public awareness in place on issues like plastic, opportunities for Ireland to
lead across Europe/Globally on Climate Change Agenda will be welcomed.
- Ireland can lead and will demonstrate what can be done to all with regard to
the SDGs.
