MISSION STATEMENT

TRIO Talent Search is a federally- funded program that promotes and prepares middle and high school students for college success

HISTORY OF TALENT SEARCH

Talent Search was created as part of the Higher Education Act of 1965 to assist students applying for newly authorized federal financial aid for postsecondary education.

TRIO NAME

  • TRIO name was born in 1968 as an amendment to the Higher Education Act
  • f 1965 to include, Upward Board, Talent Search and Student Support

Services.

  • These programs formed a trio of Federal programs designed to foster

increased education opportunity and attainment.

  • Today, TRIO has expanded to also include the following programs:
  • Educational Opportunity Centers
  • Veterans Upward Bound
  • Ronald E. McNair Program
  • Upward Bound Math & Science
  • Training Program for Federal TRIO Programs

PURPOSE OF TALENT SEARCH

  • Identify and assist students who have the potential to succeed in higher

education

  • Provide academic, career, and financial counseling to participants
  • Promote high school completion
  • Prepare for college success

PARTNERSHIP

Through a competitive grant competition awarded in September 2016, Cleveland Community College have partnered with Cleveland County Schools to offer these FREE services at all five high schools and four middle schools in the county.

APPLICATION PROCESS

  • Student complete application and submit to Success Coach
  • Project Director approves or denies application
  • Student/Parent receives welcome letter
  • Student starts to receive services
  • Students do not have to reapply

STUDENT COMMITMENT

  • Participants will remain in TRIO Talent Search until he/she receive a high

school diploma, unless the student opt out or Project Director dismisses the student.

  • Participants must maintain at least a 2.0 GPA.
  • Participants must comply with school and community behavior polices.
  • Participants must meet with their Success Coach at least four times a year

either individually or in a group.

PARENTAL COMMITMENT

  • Encourage your student to stay active in TRIO and

meet with Success Coach regularly

  • Encourage your student to sign-up for TRIO activities
  • Cancel any registrations at least 7 days prior to the

activity

  • Continue to be an advocate for college entry
  • Contact Success Coach concerning major changes

with student, such as change in school.
