PSAT / SAT has changed.
Achievement, not Aptitude Aligns to AP Inspiring Excellence Correlates to District Improvement Efforts Scholastic Aptitude Test; included IQ-type items Skills in isolation; poorly defined OLD SAT 1934 - 2015 NEW SAT (January 2016) In spite of ownership by College Board, little to no direct connection to Advanced Placement
Key Implications of Changes
No more penalty for guessing; students should attempt each item No vocabulary in isolation; no analogies; all vocabulary embedded in context; includes multiple meanings for a single word Citing textual evidence, identifying central ideas and themes; analyzing relationships, and other key skills Essay linked to a passage; students must explain how author builds an argument to persuade an audience and support explanation with evidence from the passage Core algebra skills (e.g., linear equations)
Key Implications Continued
Real-World Problems (emphasis on word problems, including scientific reasoning, data from social studies, workplace scenarios) Science score will be derived from Reading, Writing, and Math items; two passages OR one passage + one passage pair will be based on a science topic Social Studies score will be derived from Reading, Writing, and Math items; two passages OR one passage + one passage pair will be source documents or other social studies/history texts
