Art 161C (6 units): Tradition and Innovation
- Relief Printmaking in Korea
In this course, students will study many aspects of both traditional and contemporary Relief (woodblock) printmaking, including materials, tools, and techniques, as well as the issues, concepts and history of the field. Cheongju
- Korean Early Printing Museum: Jikji, the world’s oldest scroll book printed with movable metal type
- Workshop at Jeonju Hanji Experience Learning Center: make your own prints on your own paper
Haeinsa Temple
- Houses the 81,258 wooden printing blocks in the largest and the oldest wooden storage facilities in the world
- Each student will make a copy from the Tripi’aka (Three Baskets) Koreana woodblock
- Stay one night at the Haeinsa Temple: temple tour, meditation, conversation over tea with monastics, formal
monastic meals, Buddhist ceremonies and 108 bows. Gyeongju
- Bulguk Temple: see The Great Dharani Sutra, which is considered to be the oldest printed text in the world
- Gyeongju Historical Areas and Yangdoing Folk Villages are designated as World Heritage Sites by UNESCO

Meals are included in the first week of excursions, but will be out-of-pocket while in Seoul. You will be given a program budget worksheet, which will tell you how much to budget for this expense.
Travel
Getting to Seoul Students must arrange their own airfare and arrive in Seoul by the start date. Week of Excursions The group will travel around Korea during the first week by bus. Seoul While in Seoul during the last two weeks of the program, the group will travel around the city by public transportation to visit museums.

*Applicants are liable for the $200 Application Fee (“commitment deposit”) starting February 15th. It is billed to your UCSC account and will be due in March.

Scholarships
For summer 2020, scholarships of up to $2000 from the UCSC Top it Off Fund will be awarded to students on our Faculty-Led programs with the greatest financial need as determined by the UCSC Financial Aid & Scholarship Office! We have $50,000 total to award in scholarships! No scholarship application is required, but you must be accepted into a UCSC Summer 2020 Faculty-Led program in order to be considered for the
- scholarship. Recipients will be notified of their scholarship status between
March 7 and March 14, 2020. If you withdraw from the program before March 15th, you are only liable for the $200 application fee. From March 15th onward, students are liable for the total program cost. Therefore, if you are not awarded what you need to afford this program, you should withdraw no later than March 14th.
Eligibility Criteria
- Good Academic and Disciplinary
Standing at the time of application and every quarter prior to departure
- 2.5 cumulative GPA or higher at
the time of application and every quarter prior to departure
- Be at least 18 years old by the
program start date
- Sophomore, junior, or senior class
standing by the time of departure
- Be an Art Major

Students will visit many museums and cultural sites each day that will require miles of walking in Korea’s hot and humid weather conditions in the
- summer. Please consider the

Deadline March 1 Capacity Applications are processed first-come, first-serve. This program is limited capacity, meaning that it may fill up. There is also an enrollment minimum in order to run the program.
