using ¡geology, ¡ecology, ¡ethics, ¡and ¡environmental ¡history ¡provide ¡a ¡glimpse ¡of ¡how ¡we ¡can ¡better ¡ challenge ¡current ¡environmental ¡perspectives. ¡ The ¡Rachel ¡Carson ¡Center's ¡Environmental ¡Studies ¡Certificate ¡Program ¡provides ¡students ¡in ¡Munich ¡ with ¡the ¡opportunity ¡to ¡gain ¡insights ¡into ¡environmental ¡studies ¡from ¡various ¡angles ¡and ¡across ¡ multiple ¡disciplines. ¡In ¡our ¡presentation ¡we ¡will ¡introduce ¡the ¡program ¡and ¡its ¡pioneering ¡aims. ¡In ¡ addition, ¡the ¡ways ¡in ¡which ¡Munich ¡and ¡its ¡surroundings ¡are ¡environmentally ¡innovative ¡and ¡can ¡help ¡ us ¡move ¡towards ¡a ¡better ¡future ¡will ¡highlight ¡the ¡need ¡to ¡think ¡across ¡boundaries. ¡ ¡ Speakers: ¡ ¡ ¡ Lea ¡Wiser ¡received ¡her ¡B.Sc. ¡in ¡Geo-­‑Sciences ¡at ¡the ¡TU ¡and ¡LMU ¡Munich ¡in ¡2013. ¡Since ¡2014 ¡she ¡is ¡ continuing ¡with ¡the ¡M.Sc. ¡in ¡Geobiology ¡& ¡Paleobiology ¡to ¡study ¡present ¡and ¡past ¡interactions ¡ between ¡geo-­‑ ¡and ¡biosphere ¡and ¡the ¡evolution ¡of ¡organisms. ¡In ¡her ¡gap ¡year, ¡Lea ¡was ¡a ¡scientific ¡ assistant ¡on ¡a ¡research ¡vessel ¡that ¡examined ¡ocean ¡currents ¡in ¡the ¡Atlantic, ¡and ¡worked ¡at ¡an ¡ environmental ¡engineering ¡office. ¡At ¡the ¡Molecular ¡Laboratory ¡of ¡the ¡LMU ¡Munich, ¡she ¡is ¡currently ¡ writing ¡her ¡master´s ¡thesis ¡on ¡the ¡genetic ¡mechanisms ¡that ¡control ¡the ¡skeleton ¡formation ¡in ¡

¡ ¡ ¡ Maya ¡Schmitt ¡completed ¡her ¡B.A. ¡in ¡English ¡Studies ¡and ¡Law ¡at ¡the ¡LMU ¡Munich ¡before ¡pursuing ¡her ¡ studies ¡in ¡sociology ¡at ¡the ¡London ¡School ¡of ¡Economics ¡and ¡Political ¡Science. ¡Graduating ¡with ¡an ¡ M.Sc. ¡in ¡Culture ¡and ¡Society, ¡her ¡interests ¡lie ¡in ¡the ¡interplay ¡of ¡cultural, ¡linguistic ¡and ¡urban ¡

with ¡her ¡thesis ¡focus ¡on ¡political ¡cartoons, ¡she ¡became ¡interested ¡in ¡exploring ¡the ¡cultural ¡and ¡ political ¡aspects ¡of ¡urban ¡environments ¡and ¡how ¡these ¡are ¡perceived ¡in ¡different ¡social ¡contexts. ¡At ¡ this ¡juncture, ¡the ¡Environmental ¡Studies ¡Certificate ¡Program ¡of ¡the ¡Rachel ¡Carson ¡Center ¡(LMU) ¡ provides ¡a ¡productive ¡platform ¡for ¡looking ¡at ¡the ¡environment ¡from ¡various ¡angles ¡and ¡possibly ¡

• pens ¡up ¡channels ¡of ¡dialogue ¡that ¡can ¡help ¡better ¡conceptualize ¡global ¡challenges ¡in ¡the ¡future. ¡

¡ ¡ ¡ Stefan ¡Bitsch ¡began ¡studying ¡Geosciences ¡at ¡the ¡LMU ¡Munich ¡in ¡2011 ¡with ¡an ¡interest ¡in ¡the ¡broad ¡ education ¡in ¡all ¡natural ¡sciences ¡and ¡the ¡singular ¡point ¡of ¡view ¡geology ¡has ¡on ¡time. ¡He ¡participated ¡ in ¡a ¡scholarship ¡program ¡offered ¡by ¡the ¡LMU ¡at ¡the ¡Geobiology ¡department ¡where ¡he ¡studied ¡the ¡ effects ¡of ¡ocean ¡acidification ¡on ¡corals. ¡This ¡brought ¡him ¡into ¡contact ¡with ¡the ¡effects ¡and ¡problems ¡

• f ¡environmental ¡change ¡itself ¡for ¡the ¡first ¡time. ¡He ¡continued ¡his ¡geological ¡studies ¡at ¡the ¡University ¡

College ¡Dublin ¡for ¡two ¡semesters, ¡where ¡he ¡concentrated ¡on ¡courses ¡dealing ¡with ¡climate ¡change ¡ and ¡its ¡social ¡aspects. ¡After ¡completing ¡his ¡B.Sc. ¡in ¡Geosciences ¡in ¡2015, ¡he ¡enrolled ¡for ¡the ¡master’s ¡ program ¡in ¡Geology ¡at ¡the ¡LMU ¡Munich. ¡He ¡joined ¡the ¡Environmental ¡Studies ¡Certificate ¡Program ¡of ¡ the ¡Rachel ¡Carson ¡Center ¡(LMU) ¡to ¡satisfy ¡his ¡desire ¡to ¡work ¡across ¡disciplines ¡as ¡well ¡as ¡to ¡get ¡into ¡a ¡ dialogue ¡with ¡members ¡from ¡other ¡departments, ¡be ¡it ¡other ¡natural ¡sciences ¡or ¡the ¡humanities. ¡His ¡ main ¡interests ¡of ¡study ¡lie ¡in ¡the ¡effects ¡of ¡and ¡possible ¡solutions ¡for ¡the ¡plastic-­‑problem ¡on ¡a ¡global ¡ scale, ¡and ¡the ¡shifting ¡of ¡ecosystems ¡due ¡to ¡a ¡changing ¡climate ¡and ¡possible ¡social ¡and ¡faunal ¡ consequences ¡and ¡solutions ¡thereof. ¡

¡ ¡ ¡ Orsolya ¡Földesi ¡earned ¡her ¡B.A. ¡in ¡Finance ¡and ¡Accounting ¡at ¡the ¡Corvinus ¡University ¡of ¡Budapest. ¡ Already ¡during ¡her ¡bachelor ¡studies, ¡she ¡showed ¡interdisciplinary ¡interest ¡and ¡wrote ¡a ¡research ¡ paper ¡on ¡the ¡financial, ¡environmental ¡and ¡social ¡aspects ¡concerning ¡the ¡activity ¡of ¡"energy ¡saving ¡ companies", ¡and ¡an ¡additional ¡paper ¡on ¡the ¡changing ¡food ¡consumption ¡habits ¡of ¡the ¡Hungarian ¡ society ¡during ¡the ¡socialist ¡era. ¡She ¡worked ¡as ¡a ¡process ¡and ¡change ¡manager ¡before ¡starting ¡her ¡ M.Sc. ¡in ¡Business ¡Administration ¡at ¡the ¡Ludwig ¡Maximilian ¡University ¡of ¡Munich. ¡With ¡her ¡master's, ¡ she ¡is ¡mainly ¡interested ¡in ¡organizational ¡behavior ¡and ¡organizational ¡psychology, ¡and ¡is ¡writing ¡her ¡ thesis ¡on ¡the ¡sense-­‑making ¡process ¡of ¡employees ¡during ¡organizational ¡change. ¡She ¡is ¡enrolled ¡in ¡the ¡ Environmental ¡Studies ¡Certificate ¡Program ¡of ¡the ¡Rachel ¡Carson ¡Center ¡(LMU) ¡where ¡she ¡is ¡ completing ¡her ¡final ¡project ¡on ¡the ¡economic, ¡environmental ¡and ¡social ¡aspects ¡of ¡cut ¡flowers. ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡
