The Sturmabteilung (S.A.) “Assault Division”

  • These were the stormtroopers
  • Paramilitary organization

○ Group organized similarly to a military, but not officially part of the army or police

  • Called “brownshirts”
  • Terrorized Nazi political opponents
  • Around 1934 effectively replaced by the

  • What the SA became
  • Headed by Heinrich Himmler
  • Continued much of what the SA were doing,

became part of the police force in Germany

  • Responsible for the Kristallnacht

○ “Crystal Night,” when SS troops burned and destroyed thousands of Jewish businesses, homes, hospitals and synagogues

  • Played a large part in the early

concentration camps

  • Also had the Gestapo, Hitler’s Secret Police

○ Was a German film director that had been mesmerized by Hitler during one his speeches ○ She made many propaganda films for the Nazis

  • You’re going to be looking at many examples of Nazi propaganda in groups,

but first, let’s look at one together.

  • This example depicts inaccurate and offensive stereotypes of a Jewish man.

This is what the Nazis did to reinforce their ideals on the rest of the population

  • propaganda. You will then answer the questions that go with each station.
  • THE QUESTIONS ARE LABELED, EACH STATION HAS SPECIFIC

  • You are able to discuss with your group members. Each of you will need to fill
  • ut a worksheet. ALSO, put your group name on your worksheet,

because we probably won’t finish today

  • When instructed, you will rotate stations to look at the next set of propaganda
