The average cost for the funeral of a homeless person is $7,000. There is often no family to be claimed and expenses fall onto the city. Annual expenses for the county, city and hospitals could be over 60,000,000.

Poverty rate for Rapid City: 16 percent Poverty rate for all of South Dakota: 14.1 percent Native American poverty rate in Rapid city: 50.9 percent (One of the highest in the country) The number of homeless increased by over 100 people last year, now estimated at around 2,000 people.
