Recap questions to answer in 8 minutes
In the previous lesson, you learnt about the history of teeth and how they have changed over time. Today you will learn about the important role of teeth in digesting food.
Key vocabulary: saliva acid digest enzymes
Mouth
- This is where the digestive system starts as it is
from this point that food is entered in your mouth. Chewing is the first stage of the digestive system.
- The different sets of teeth break, rip, tear and
grind food using enzymes in the saliva to help so that it can enter the esophagus.
- Teeth chomp your food, breaking it into smaller
- bits. Meanwhile, the tongue keeps moving the
food around, shifting it to the type of teeth that will be best at munching it. It also squeezes the chewed food into swallowable lumps, pushing them back towards the throat.
How do your teeth help your digestive system?
The hard surfaces of your teeth and the enamel that covers it, as well as the different shape that each type of the teeth, make the grinding process more efficient and effective. Each type of teeth performs specific roles that make the process of digestion easier. Incisors The teeth in front of your mouth or the incisors are perfect for cutting food and each set of front teeth have canines on both corners, also designed to tear and cut foods and push these foods inside your mouth for better grinding. Premolars The premolars also help in the chewing process and crush the food. Molars The molars’ size helps a lot in grinding and chewing the food into smaller pieces and allows you to swallow the food easily.
