Waste/Recycling vendor change

On January 12, 2009, BUMC switched recycling vendors to the company Save that Stuff (the same vendor that works in the hospital). Save that Stuff will work in the same model as Casella did for us previously.

Implications:

  • Your office may have been without a recycling tote for a few days
  • New totes have an easy-to-see BU sticker on their lid
  • Cardboard bailing will begin soon

Pilot Recycling Program Updates

2008 Progress:

  • 1. Waste removed from BUMC in 2008: 816 tons

Average per month: 68 tons

  • 2. Estimated recycled waste: 18 tons

Average per month: 1.5 tons

  • 3. BUMC recycling makes up .022% of our total waste.

AASHE recommends new program aim to divert 10-15% of total waste from landfills

Pilot Recycling Program Updates

Reasons for low recycling rate: 1. Confusion about how recycling works on campus 2. Lack of engagement with student population 3. Pilot recycling program launched late in the year

Previous Ideas

slide-31
SLIDE 31

Contact: www.bumc.bu.edu/sustainability | bumcsc@bu.edu BUMC Pilot Recycling Meeting February 6, 2009

Previous Ideas

  • 1. Energy audit of lab equipment

Investigating some best practices from other universities and hospitals across the country.

  • 2. Green Purchasing Plan

The BPHC has released a basic green purchasing guide and has offered to give it to BUMC and the BMC as a template for future purchasing ideas.

  • 3. Furniture/Equipment recycling plan

The forum might become a sort of ‘internal Craig’s List’ for lab or office equipment.
