Think about what careers you are interested in or what do you want to be when you grow up. Some of you may know exactly what you want to do since you were like 5 years old. Others of you may have several careers that interest you. And some of you may have absolutely no idea what you want to do. Each of these answers to the question is totally OKAY and age appropriate. My hope is that today, as we go through the slides about your high school options that you find something interesting that you want to know more about.

Your BOUNDARY High School ‐ Comprehensive Education
Core Content Classes Advanced Placement Dual Credit/College Now Academic Support eLearning Elective Classes Fine & Performing Arts
Regardless of where an Olathe student attends high school they will receive a first class education. Typically, a student’s high school is based on where you live. This is called your BOUNDARY high school. So, if a student lives in the attendance boundary of Olathe East HS, the student would go to that high school. If they live in the attendance boundary of Olathe North HS, the student would go to that high school. All high school students receive a comprehensive high school education including
- Core Content classes
- Fine & Performing Arts programs – which are elective classes
- Elective classes – all the classes you choose to take because you are interested or want to find out more
about it.
- Advanced Placement classes ‐ can become college credit by taking the national AP test at the end of
the year
- Dual Credit/College Now classes – in partnership with Johnson County Community College
- Academic Support classes
- eLearning options
When students go to high school, they will be faced with a lot of options from different sports & activities, to classes they are required to take, and classes they want to take. In Olathe, we like to promote choice by providing a variety of options to choose from.
Have you ever taken a Tech Ed class in Middle School? Have you ever taken a FACS class? Or How about a computer class or even a newspaper or yearbook class? These are all Career & Technical Education or CTE courses and fall within career pathways. These are the foundation for most of the elective choices in high school. Every high school has a variety of CTE pathways available.
CTE pathways at every high school
- No application process – open to anyone any year
Any student at any high school has the opportunity to try out these pathways. Each pathway has multiple courses within them. If you decide to take the intro class and like it, you can take the second and third classes to learn more skills. If you complete three or more classes, you can earn what is called a “Completer Status” that goes on your HS transcript and makes you stand out. If you take an intro class and decide you don’t like it, no worries, you can choose a different pathway’s intro class to try it out. You may try out as many of them as you like. Just know that Completer Status comes from 3 credits in ONE pathway. Construction Trades Pathway: a career in architecture, construction, and skilled mechanical trades. These are the people who build and remodel houses, apartments, industrial buildings, warehouses, office buildings, churches, schools and recreational facilities. This pathway also includes the builders of highways, streets, bridges, tunnels and airports as well as power plants, chemical plants, refineries and mills. Employees in construction literally build our future! The Family, Community and Consumer Services Pathway focuses on careers relating to meeting the essential needs of people, especially occupations which focus on relationships between family members including family counseling, marriage therapy, non‐profit management and others related to helping people. Fashion, Apparel and Interior designers Pathway combine the principles and elements of design, production processes and maintenance techniques with the needs of humans to create 4 dimensional designs. People working in the Restaurant & Event Management Pathway—Culinary Arts & Management pathway work in management, marketing and operations of restaurants and other businesses or organizations with food service‐related areas. Courses offered may vary between schools. The Marketing Pathway is designed to prepare learners for careers and/or continuing education opportunities in planning, managing and performing marketing activities to reach organizational objectives. Students will learn skills in planning, managing, and performing marketing activities to reach organizational objectives such as brand management, professional sales, merchandising, marketing communications and market research.

The Health Careers Pathway includes earning 4 certificates: Certified Nurses Assistant, Phlebotomy Tech, Home Health Aid, and Medical Terminology along with their Anatomy & Physiology Science course. Student may also enter the Emergency Medical Services Program their senior year only if they would like to move into EMT or paramedic. The Welding Technology Program offers students to learn the trade and art of welding. Skills in welding are in high demand whether it be in the commercial industry, in the medical industry prosthetic or in the art of sculpting. Welding skills is in a shortage right now and makes high wages. Many if not all of these programs receive college credit free of charge through “Excel in CTE”. This can be quite a substantial savings in college tuition.
Historically, the 21st Century Academies began with just four in 2003 at North and
- Northwest. In 1999, the district surveyed the community about what 21st Century High
schools should look like. The feedback was for students to have focused areas of study in high school and the 21st Century "Programs" were started. A fifth academy was added at North in 2004. Four site‐based programs were added in 2005 at South and East. And, one added in 2009 at North. In the past several years, they were re‐branded as the 21st Century Academies. In the fall of 2017, six new academies were launched at West, South, and East, for a total of 15 academies across the five high schools. There is only one of each academy.
21st Century Academies
4‐Year Programs Apply in 8th grade Attend the HS where the academy is located (full time)
- Only one of each
- Too expensive and facilities take up too
much space to replicate 5 times Academies are four years of classes starting in 9th grade through 12th grade. Students will apply in 8th grade 1st semester and if invited may join the academy and the high school where it is located full time. Students will be a full time student of that high school. We can’t replicate the academies 5 times because they are too expensive and take up too much facility space. They are spread out across the 5 high schools and students from across the district may be a part of them.
TRANSPORTATION IS PROVIDED TO TRANSFER STUDENTS BY THE DISTRICT
(TO AND FROM SCHOOL OR UNTIL YOU WANT/CAN DRIVE)
If a student is accepted to an academy other than their home high school, they are considered at "transfer" student, and transportation will be provided by the district to and from school all four years, as needed. If their academy is located at their home high school, they would fall under those transportation guidelines.

The High School Options Fair is a great way to help you start making decisions about high school which will begin throughout first semester of 8th grade. It is time to GET INFORMED as this time next year you will have already ENROLLED for high school. There will be childcare available.
Olathe's high school students have great options for students to explore careers they are interested in or want to find out about.
- A great comprehensive general education, including a variety of CTE Pathways
- 2‐year OATC programs their Junior & Senior Year
- Specialized 21st Century Academies at select high school locations
Each of the options work together. If an academy student discovers they are no longer interested in the academy content, they can withdraw after one year, and try out a CTE pathway or apply for an OATC
- program. Some students can work out their schedule to do both an academy and an OATC Program. 10
- f our Academies have a CTE pathway embedded in them and students can earn both an endorsement
and completer status on their transcript. Our goal in Olathe Public Schools is to OPEN THE DOORS to the future for our high school students!
