Overview
What is the New QCE system? What are the requirements of this New QCE? How does my student qualify for university entry
in 2021 and beyond?
Where can I go for more information?
All subjects will have 4 Units All general subjects will have an external assessment at the end of Unit
4
The syllabus tells the teacher what they have to teach and when The syllabus is developmental- each unit builds on the previous one In Units 3 & 4 there will be 4 assessment items- 3 which the school will
write and mark and an external exam for general subjects & a common assessment task for Essential Maths & English
External exams will start in Week 4 of Term 4 2020 and run for 3 weeks This means that in general subjects Unit 3 will start in Term 4 Yr 11 and
Unit 3 in applied subjects will start in Term 1 Year 12.
General Subjects – Units 3 & 4 Essential Subjects- Unit 3 & 4 Applied Subjects
IA 1 IA 2 IA 3 External Result /100
IA 1 Common Assessment IA 2 IA 3 Result Item 1 Item 2 Item 3 Item 4 Result
Completed Core: Study 3 subject continuously for 4 Units = 12
Credits
20 Credits overall Units 3 & 4 must be studied as a pair. It is recommended that
students do not change subjects at the end of Unit 3 as they will not receive any QCE credits even if they pass that Unit.
Must have successfully completed a semester of a Maths and an
English during Units 1 - 4
Units 1 & 2 = 1 each if completed successfully In the ‘old’ system if a student exited a subject at the end of
Semester 2 with a pass, but failed Semester 1, the result that they exited with at the end of the year would allow the student to accumulate 2 credits. This is not the case in the new system.
Conceded Core- Drop from more difficult maths to less difficult maths. Still only 3 QCE Credits
Your student need to pick subjects according
to:
what they like; are good at; and will help them reach their post school goal. And stick to it
To be eligible students must complete 4 semesters of
an English subject and pass
Additionally they need to study 4 ATAR subjects
(General) + either 1 Cert III VET (Vocational Education and Training) or 1 (Applied) SAS subject (School Authority Subject)
The ATAR will be calculated on the student’s best 20
semesters (each subject studied for 2 years = 4 semesters) or their best 5 subjects.
ATAR Eligibility
6 General Subjects
5 General Subjects + 1 x applied or Cert III or higher 4 General Subjects + 1 x applied or Cert III or higher
VET A Certificate III or higher can be: Used as part of an ATAR calculation when you also study 4 other general subjects University of Sunshine Coast will allow entry to courses with it
Used for a QCE calculation- Cert III approx. 8 QCE credits
Next year we are considering running VET courses 1 day a
week in the following areas with an MOU with Axiom College:
Cert II Health Support Cert II Logistics Cert II Engineering * Diploma of Business - $1990
There will be an information session at the beginning of 2019 for students interested in these courses.
Traineeships and TAFE will also be available for students
Students get one bite of VETiS (Vocational Education and
Training in Schools) Funding
If a student wants to do Cert III Fitness & Cert II
Hospitality with Binnacle and TAFE respectively, then they will need to decide which course will use their VETiS funding.
Fitness will cost $310 (Binnacle) Cert II Hospitality will cost $1500 (TAFE)
Decision ???
VET qualifications that are just user pays (No VETiS
funding) that we offer:
Cert II Business- Free Cert III Business- $210
Principles-
Ensure that assessment is equitable for all students Students should have opportunities to demonstrate
knowledge and skills
Minimise barriers Planned and negotiated as early as possible Streamline processes Enhance consistency
Approval will not be school based- the school will develop a policy and
process to manage students who need special provisions & considerations, but the policy and process will be based on QCAA guidelines.
QCAA will approve extra time for Internal Assessment items Template for Medical Practitioners Student still needs to sit external exam and QCAA will decide if it is
atypical
Students who miss assessment due to a family holiday will not be
allocated special provisions or consideration. This has the potential to have a significant impact on a student’s QCE and ATAR result if applicable.
Example: External assessment missed- possible outcomes: zero result-
impact on overall result + deemed not complete course- no QCE points for units 3 & 4 as they are studied as a pair.
Your student need to pick subjects according
to:
what they like; are good at; and will help them reach their post school goal. And stick to it
ATAR= Australian Tertiary Admission Rank
Useful only to get you into Uni or TAFE via QTAC application
Calculated by QTAC
General Subjects= Count towards an ATAR
Applied Subjects= May not count towards an ATAR
QTAC= Queensland Tertiary Admission Centre
QCE= Queensland Certificate of Education
Issued by QCAA
It is a qualification that employers expect school leavers to have
QCAA= Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority
