The test can be used for placing a course participant at the correct level. We will describe the test briefly in this introduction after which a more detailed step-by- step walkthrough will follow. The test is based on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages and tests the respondents at the levels A1, A2, B1, B2 and
- C1. In a placement test it does not make sense to
test at a C2 level separately. An participant who scores 80% or more at the highest test level is thereby at level C1 or higher. The test is a mixture of self-assessment and actual testing. You will always be asked to perform a self-assessment before moving on to the next step. The evaluation determines the entry level of the test. The test examines the skills of the respondents in writing, reading and listening competences as well as spoken production and spoken interaction. There are separate tests for the areas vocabulary and grammar, reading competences and listening competences. The language skills writing competences, spoken production and spoken interaction are difficult to examine in an online test so here the user only fills in the self-assessment. You get separate results for self-assessment and actual testing for each skill. The test is interactive and self-regulating in the following manner: You choose an entry level and you are presented with a self-assessment for “writing competences”. If you respond “can” to all 6 language skills you are asked to do the self- assessment at a higher level. If you respond “can” to only 1 or none of the statements, you will be asked to do the self-assessment at a lower level. When you have found the right level in the self- assessment process, you will be directed to a the next part of the test “vocabulary and grammar” at the level indicated in the self-assessment. If the test shows that you are at the right level, the result is registered and you are directed to the self-assessment for “reading competences” at the same level. If you score 90% or more, you are asked to take the test at a higher level. If you score 20% or less you are asked to do the test at a lower level. In this way the level is regulated all the way through the test. The following chart shows the flow through the test. The chart does not show the option for a change of level:

- 1. When you are logged in you choose the test language and the instructional language and start the
test: You choose German as the test language and English as the instructional language:

- 2. After this, you are asked for an indicative placement for a self-assessment of your “writing
competences”. You choose B1 as a starting point. A1 (basic level 1: beginners) A2 (basic level 2: pre-intermediate) B1 (intermediate level 1) B2 (intermediate level 2) C1 (advanced level 1) C2 (advanced level 2)

- 3. You fill out the self-assessment in accordance with your own assessment of your competences:

- 4. On the basis of this self-assessment you will also be asked to answer a self-assessment at level B2.
At this level you answer “cannot” to multiple questions.

- 5. On the basis of the result the test estimates that your self-assessment is at level B1 for ”writing
competences” and thus the test directs you to the next part of the text “vocabulary and grammar at level B1: [The image below is just part of the test].

- 6. You did fairly well on the test and scored 70% in “vocabulary and grammar”. The test registers that your
level is B1 for this part of the test and automatically directs you to the self-assessment of the “reading skills” at level B1:

- 7. In the self-assessment you assess that you are at level B1 and you are directed to the reading
competences test at this stage. [Here is the first of 8 exercises as an example]
- 8. You did very well on the test and scored 90% of the possible points. Therefore you are asked if you
would like to do the test at level B2. You take the test and score 70% of the possible points. The test registers that you are at level B2 in “reading competences” and directs you to a level B2 self-assessment of “listening competences”.
_____________________________________________________________________________________ Studieskolen, Folkeuniversitetet, Folkuniversitetet, Nordplus 10 9. You fill out the self-assessment but you do not believe that you meet the capability description for level B2. However, you were able to answer “can” to 3 of the 6 possible
- statements. Therefore the test estimates that your evaluation corresponds to level B1 for
“listening competences”.

- 10. The test estimates that your own evaluation corresponds to level B1 for ”listening competences”
and directs you to the test for ”listening competences test” at level B1: [Here is the first exercise as an example]
- 11. You complete the listening test at level B1 and score 100%.
- 12. As you have scored 100% in the listening test at level B1, you are asked if you also want to do the
listening test at B2. You agree and complete the listening test at level B2. It proves to be too difficult for you (you only score 30%) so the test registers level B1 for “listening competences”.

- 13. You are sent on to the self-assessment of spoken production (speaking competences) at level B1.
You answer “can” to 5 out of 6 possible statements and the test registers level B1 for the self- assessment of “spoken production” (speaking competences).
- 14. A test for ”spoken production” (speaking competences) does not yet exist so you are sent on to the
self-assessment of “spoken interaction” (conversation competences) at level B1.

- 15. Here you do not think that you are quite at level B1 as you are only able to answer ”can” to 3 out of
6 possible statements. The test registers that you are most likely to be level A2 for “conversation competences”.

- 16. Ultimately, you are asked to finish the test and you get your result chart. You have the option of
printing the chart, sending it to your e-mail and/or sending it to a guidance counsellor who you can choose from a drop down menu.
