What is your starting point

  • Who lives in a house they own?

– Are you looking to build….the studio?? – Where in the house?

  • Who rents or lives with someone?

– Many of the items to be discussed will apply and some will have to be more portable

The studio

  • Planning a Studio
  • The Room
  • The Bench
  • Storage
  • Paint Booth
  • Photo Area

Planning Process

  • If you fail to plan…..you plan to fail
  • Every good plan is made to be changed
  • Start by drawing the room either on graph paper or on

Auto CAD!

  • Shop look and think at Home Depot/Lowes, Ikea, the

internet, etc. Get ideas

  • Make a budget $$$ or $$/yr
  • You can build all at once or over time with a good plan
  • There is no right or wrong, only what works for you!
slide-8
SLIDE 8

AMPS East 2011

Planning the studio

  • Planning items

–Ventilation –Lighting –Power –Communication –Compressed Air –Vacuum –Flooring –Cabinets Shelves & Furnishings –Safety

slide-9
SLIDE 9

AMPS East 2011

Ventilation

  • Plan for room ventilation.

–A/C and Heat feed and return

  • Ceiling Fans in the bench

area

  • Ducting to the outside for

paint booth

slide-10
SLIDE 10

AMPS East 2011

Lighting

  • If windows are available, maximize natural

lighting

  • Go with one style light, either fluorescent or

incandescent….do not mix

  • Plan for task lighting.
  • Lighted magnifiers, make sure to match light type
  • Think of lighting the paint booth.
slide-11
SLIDE 11

SLIDE 12

AMPS East 2011

power

  • You can never have enough power or outlets.
  • Bench should have multiple outlet strips at either

end

  • Bench area wall should have quad wall outlets.
  • Also plan outlets for compressor, paint booth

fans, computer/desk

slide-13
SLIDE 13

AMPS East 2011

communication

  • The room should include a computer with CAT 6

wiring back to the router.

  • Wireless is easy but can be slower
  • Telephone, wired or wireless?
  • Cable/Satellite –for entertainment!!
slide-14
SLIDE 14

AMPS East 2011

Compressed air

  • Use an “industrial” compressor. Minimum 2 ½ gallon

pancake type

  • Look to mount compressor in a sound proof area if

possible.

  • Use copper ½ inch tubing or pipe for piping.
  • Pipe air to the paint booth & work bench
  • Use local quick disconnect fittings and pressure

regulators

  • Install a storage tank if possible to increase

compressed air storage

slide-15
SLIDE 15

AMPS East 2011

Compressed air

slide-16
SLIDE 16

AMPS East 2011

vacuum

  • Think about vacuum in

the bench area for clean up and for working with resin

  • Make a small “hood”

from flexible ducting connected to the vacuum hose

  • Vacuum should also be

accessible for wood working for bases!

slide-17
SLIDE 17

AMPS East 2011

flooring

  • Something easy to clean/paint resistant
  • Does not support the small part monster
  • Stay away from carpet
  • I like garage tiles

Cabinets, shelves & Furnishings

  • Cabinets, THINK IKEA, Very nice lines of

inexpensive kitchen cabinets both wall and base cabinets

  • Shelves for storage, Home Depot/Lowes
  • Look in the shelving aisle but also in lumber for

pre-punched side panels and cut shelves

  • Display case/ shelves….again THINK IKEA
  • Work Bench for modeling & Bench/Desk or other

for paint booth

slide-19
SLIDE 19

AMPS East 2011

Cabinets, shelves & Furnishings

  • Desk for computer
  • Most important item….the chair. Look for a GOOD

comfortable, back supporting, well built chair. You will be spending a lot of time in it!

  • Visitor chair(s)
  • Clock….. So you know how long you have been

working!

  • I love me wall art!!

safety

  • Plug in emergency light
  • First Aid kit
  • Fire Extinguisher
  • Eye Shields
  • Respirator

The Room

  • Is the room and attic

room, spare bedroom, basement room, garage??

  • Every room has strengths
  • Is the room year round

and not affected by seasonal change

  • Is the space finished or

unfinished?

  • Walls are best with

paneling

  • Drop ceilings with inset

lights

slide-23
SLIDE 23

AMPS East 2011

The Bench

  • Give yourself as much

space as possible

  • Arms reach to each

side…5 –6’ for the modeling area

  • Additional area for paint

booth, resin or woodworking for bases.

slide-24
SLIDE 24

AMPS East 2011

Storage

  • Consider stash as well as

library.

  • For stash I used 16” deep

shelving and matching 12” for the books at the end

  • Note the small parts bin,

great for all those leftovers

  • Use binders with photo

insert pages for decals

slide-25
SLIDE 25

AMPS East 2011

storage

  • Small stackable drawers

are great.

  • These were from Staples

and fit perfect. On sale could get a nice big stack

  • You can organize PE,

styrene, tracks, etc.

slide-26
SLIDE 26

AMPS East 2011

Storage

  • All those little paint

bottles.

  • Long narrow shelved for

paint

  • Enough room to organize

base on type, finish colors, etc.

slide-27
SLIDE 27

AMPS East 2011

Paint Booth

  • Prefer a scratch built
  • Using 3/8 plywood,

essentially a 2’ x 2’ x 2’ box

  • If you use mostly acrylics,

min 100 cfm fan enamels at least 200 cfm

  • Use under cabinet hockey

puck lights

  • Interior shelves to hold

solvents

slide-28
SLIDE 28

AMPS East 2011

Paint booth

  • Outlet on the side for

shaker power

  • Paper towel rack

underneath

  • Regulator also underneath
  • Vent exhaust to outside
slide-29
SLIDE 29

AMPS East 2011

Photo area

  • Backdrop of light blue

polyester fabric $2/yd

  • Spring loaded curtain rod

$4

  • Side diffusers use a

transparent white fabric $2/yd

  • Wire frame bent from 1/16

rod $2

  • Lights after shopping well

slide-30
SLIDE 30

AMPS East 2011

Photo area

  • You don’t need a store

bought photo booth!

  • Mine is built in using my

16” deep “stash” shelves

slide-31
SLIDE 31

AMPS East 2011

Tools

  • Peg board makes a great

bench back drop

  • A set of jewelers pliers

for PE and sprue cutters are a must.

  • Peg Board cups are good

for miscellaneous items

slide-32
SLIDE 32

AMPS East 2011

Tools

AMPS East 2011

Tools

  • Bench top organizer for

frequently used tools.

  • Organizer was a sale

pickup at Staples.

slide-34
SLIDE 34

AMPS East 2011

Tools

  • A great holiday gift idea.

slide-36
SLIDE 36

AMPS East 2011

Tools

  • This is an acrylic

magazine holder. I use it to hold the kit directions and any printed research material.

  • Something like this keeps

paper off the work bench and out of the way.

slide-37
SLIDE 37

AMPS East 2011

Tools

  • Pegboard on the legs of

the bench keeps the larger items like the respirator or visor from clogging the main work area but are within reach.

slide-38
SLIDE 38

AMPS East 2011
