A Doctor’s dilemma.

• In 2002, Suffolk GP Dr Vincent Forte had a difficult day in surgery
• He asked five different women to provide a urine sample so he could

test, diagnose and treat their problem

• He gave them the standard Universal Container into which they were

asked to deliver a mid-stream urine sample. They all complained (Have you tried peeing into one of these?)

MSU: the start-stop-start method

Clinical Trial October-December 2010

A prospective study with historical controls to compare the relative bacterial sample contamination rates between an automated mid-stream urine collection system (AMSU) to a standard MSU collection method across all units at The Royal Free Hospital NHS Trust, and predictive antibiotic prescribing rates.

A reduction in the percentage of samples which are contaminated prior to bacteriological testing would result in fewer contaminated samples needing to be repeated, or resulting in inappropriate antibiotic prescribing at an additional cost to the NHS and causing delays in treating patients and potentially reducing length of hospital stay.
