  1. THE KISS OF BETRAYAL Mark 14:43-52

  2. EVENTS OF PASSOVER WEEK: 1. Jesus has a coronation as King. 2. Jesus goes into the temple and clears the money changers. (Mark 11:18) 3. Jesus’ authority is in question.

  3. EVENTS OF PASSOVER WEEK: 4. Jesus explains the parable of the vineyard owner. (Mark 12) 5. Jesus continues to amaze and denounce the religious elite with His teaching. (Mark 14:1-2)

  4. MARK 14:43-45 While He was still speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, suddenly arrived. With him was a mob, with swords and clubs, from the chief priests, the scribes, and the elders. His betrayer had given them a signal. “The One I kiss,” he said, “He’s the One; arrest Him and take Him away under guard.” So when he came, he went right up to Him and said, “Rabbi!” —and kissed Him.

  5. MARK 14:46-48 Then they took hold of Him and arrested Him. And one of those who stood by drew his sword, struck the high priest’s slave, and cut off his ear. But Jesus said to them, “Have you come out with swords and clubs, as though I were a criminal, to capture Me?

  6. MARK 14:49-51 Every day I was among you, teaching in the temple complex, and you didn’t arrest Me. But the Scriptures must be fulfilled.” Then they all deserted Him and ran away. Now a certain young man, having a linen cloth wrapped around his naked body, was following Him. They caught hold of him, but he left the linen cloth behind and ran away naked.

  7. MAJOR QUESTION: What made Judas betray Jesus?

  8. WHAT DO WE KNOW ABOUT JUDAS? 1. He was a disciple of Jesus. 2. He was the only disciple not from Galilee, he was from Kerioth. 3. John tells us he was put in charge of the money. 4. The other disciples trusted him. 5. Jesus loved and served him. 6. Judas was greedy.

  9. JOHN 12:4-6 Then one of His disciples, Judas Iscariot (who was about to betray Him), said, “Why wasn’t this fragrant oil sold for 300 denarii and given to the poor?” He didn’t say this because he cared about the poor but because he was a thief. He was in charge of the money-bag and would steal part of what was put in it.”

  10. What was different now than when he first began to follow Jesus?

  11. DIFFERENCES: 1. Judas gets bitter.

  12. MARK 14:6,9 Then Jesus said, “Leave her alone. Why are you bothering her? She has done a noble thing for Me ... I assure you: Wherever the gospel is proclaimed in the whole world, what this woman has done will also be told in memory of her.”

  13. MARK 14:10-11 Then Judas Iscariot, one of the Twelve, went to the chief priests to hand Him over to them. And when they heard this, they were glad and promised to give him silver. So he started looking for a good opportunity to betray Him.

  14. DIFFERENCES: 1. Judas gets bitter. 2. Judas was greedy.

  15. JOHN 12:6 He didn’t say this because he cared about the poor but because he was a thief. He was in charge of the money-bag and would steal part of what was put in it.

  16. ZECHARIAH 11:12-14 Then I said to them, “If it seems right to you, give me my wages; but if not, keep them.” So they weighed my wages, 30 pieces of silver.

  17. ZECHARIAH 11:12-14 “Throw it to the potter,” the Lord said to me—this magnificent price I was valued by them. So I took the 30 pieces of silver and threw it into the house of the Lord, to the potter. Then I cut in two my second staff, Union, annulling the brotherhood between Judah and Israel.

  18. How can Jesus be at peace while being betrayed?

  19. HOW CAN JESUS BE AT PEACE? 1. Jesus was at peace because He loved his betrayer.

  20. JOHN 13:3-5 Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God; so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him.

  21. HOW CAN JESUS BE AT PEACE? 1. Jesus was at peace because He loved his betrayer. 2. Jesus was at peace because He knew He was in God’s will.

  22. MARK 10:33 Listen! We are going up to Jerusalem. The Son of Man will be handed over to the chief priests and scribes, and they will condemn him to death. Then they will hand Him over to the Gentiles, and they will mock Him, spit on Him, Flog Him and kill Him, and He will rise after 3 days.”

  23. JOHN 10:17-18 This is why the Father loves Me, because I am laying down My life so I may take it up again. No one takes it from Me, but I lay it down on My own. I have the right to lay it down, and I have the right to take it up again. I have received this command from My Father.”

  24. MARK 14:36 “Abba, Father! all things are possible for You. Take this cup away from Me. Nevertheless, not what I will, but what you will.”

  25. TOOLS TO KNOW GOD’S WILL 1. God gives you the Holy Spirit.

  26. 1 CORINTHIANS 2:10-12 The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God. For who knows a person’s thoughts except their own spirit within them? In the same way no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. What we have received is not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may understand what God has freely given us.”

  27. TOOLS TO KNOW GOD’S WILL: 1. God gives you the Holy Spirit. 2. God gives you His Word.

  28. ROMANS 12:2 Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.
