MARK 14:43-45

While He was still speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, suddenly arrived. With him was a mob, with swords and clubs, from the chief priests, the scribes, and the

  • elders. His betrayer had given them a signal. “The One I

kiss,” he said, “He’s the One; arrest Him and take Him away under guard.” So when he came, he went right up to Him and said, “Rabbi!” —and kissed Him.

MARK 14:46-48

Then they took hold of Him and arrested Him. And one

MARK 14:49-51

Every day I was among you, teaching in the temple complex, and you didn’t arrest Me. But the Scriptures must be fulfilled.” Then they all deserted Him and ran away. Now a certain young man, having a linen cloth wrapped around his naked body, was following Him. They caught hold of him, but he left the linen cloth behind and ran away naked.

MAJOR QUESTION: What made Judas betray Jesus?

slide-10
SLIDE 10

WHAT DO WE KNOW ABOUT JUDAS?

1. He was a disciple of Jesus.

  • 2. He was the only disciple not from Galilee, he

was from Kerioth.

  • 3. John tells us he was put in charge of the money.
  • 4. The other disciples trusted him.
  • 5. Jesus loved and served him.
  • 6. Judas was greedy.

JOHN 12:4-6

Then one of His disciples, Judas Iscariot (who was about to betray Him), said, “Why wasn’t this fragrant

  • il sold for 300 denarii and given to the poor?” He

didn’t say this because he cared about the poor but because he was a thief. He was in charge of the money-bag and would steal part of what was put in it.”

slide-12
SLIDE 12

What was different now than when he first began to follow Jesus?

slide-13
SLIDE 13

DIFFERENCES:

  • 1. Judas gets bitter.
slide-14
SLIDE 14

MARK 14:6,9

Then Jesus said, “Leave her alone. Why are you bothering her? She has done a noble thing for Me ... I assure you: Wherever the gospel is proclaimed in the whole world, what this woman has done will also be told in memory of her.”

slide-15
SLIDE 15

MARK 14:10-11

Then Judas Iscariot, one of the Twelve, went to the chief priests to hand Him over to them. And when they heard this, they were glad and promised to give him

  • silver. So he started looking for a good opportunity to

betray Him.

ZECHARIAH 11:12-14

Then I said to them, “If it seems right to you, give me my wages; but if not, keep them.” So they weighed my wages, 30 pieces of silver.

ZECHARIAH 11:12-14

“Throw it to the potter,” the Lord said to me—this magnificent price I was valued by them. So I took the 30 pieces of silver and threw it into the house of the Lord, to the potter. Then I cut in two my second staff, Union, annulling the brotherhood between Judah and Israel.

Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God; so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his

  • waist. After that, he poured water into a basin and

began to wash his disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him.

MARK 10:33

Listen! We are going up to Jerusalem. The Son of Man will be handed over to the chief priests and scribes, and they will condemn him to death. Then they will hand Him over to the Gentiles, and they will mock Him, spit on Him, Flog Him and kill Him, and He will rise after 3 days.”

slide-25
SLIDE 25

JOHN 10:17-18

This is why the Father loves Me, because I am laying down My life so I may take it up again. No one takes it from Me, but I lay it down on My own. I have the right to lay it down, and I have the right to take it up again. I have received this command from My Father.”

TOOLS TO KNOW GOD’S WILL

  • 1. God gives you the Holy Spirit.
slide-28
SLIDE 28

1 CORINTHIANS 2:10-12

The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of

  • God. For who knows a person’s thoughts except their
  • wn spirit within them? In the same way no one knows

the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. What we have received is not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may understand what God has freely given us.”
