than 630,000 renters have been laid off since mid-March

  • Cumulatively they owe $500

Renters have Fewer Resources to Endure Crisis

  • Before the pandemic, nearly 400,000

Ohioans spent more than half of their income on rent.

  • More than 1 million Ohioans have applied

for unemployment, but only 480,000 have received benefits through April 25.

  • The federal $600 per week unemployment

assistance boost only lasts through July.

Economic Downturn to be Long-Lasting

  • The Congressional Budget Office

expects 15% unemployment through September and double- digit unemployment through much of 2021

  • There will be a cumulative

backlog of evictions that will be enforced in the near future

Steve Gladman President

  • Before COVID, only 4-5% of rentals in Ohio were subject

to eviction

  • Now eviction rates are projected to be a high as 20%

  • Declining rental income impacts landlords’ ability to pay

mortgages, payroll, taxes and property maintenance costs

  • If landlords can’t pay property taxes, schools’ revenue will

be negatively impacted

  • Eviction moratoriums only hit the pause button, but tenants

still owe ballooning sums they can’t pay

  • We need resources to flatten the eviction curve
  • The solution is federal emergency rental assistance to

ensure housing stability for residents AND property owners

Making the Case for Emergency Rental Assistance

  • Please ask your member of Congress to

support $100 billion for Emergency Rental

  • Assistance. Nearly one-million Ohioans applied

for unemployment benefits within a few weeks. Housing is foundational to the economy.

  • Negotiations on the next coronavirus relief bill

have already begun! The TIME IS NOW! Don’t hesitate to call if you questions! (614) 619-3255 or ginawilt@cohhio.org THANK YOU!
