What is the Cache Manager?

The Cache Manager is a piece of software designed to aid in the monitoring of a LOCKSS Network. It provides a single site where the content of multiple caches can be examined. It also has the added benefit of allowing users to view information about the content of a cache without actually having access to the Administrative User Interface.

Walkthrough of the Installation

To demonstrate how easy it is, I’m going to walk through the installation of the Conspectus Database.

Configuring the Conspectus Database

The Configuration file contains a hash of the caches which maps a name to the location of the cache. It also contains the username and password that is used to access the information on each cache.

Configuring the Global Debugging User

If each cache in your network is administrated by a different user, they are likely (hopefully) using different passwords to access their administrative user interfaces. Fortunately, the LOCKSS title database allows for the definition of a global username and

  • password. All that is required is a username and an MD5sum of

the desired password.

Configuring the Caches

The cache manager also must be granted access to the LOCKSS Administrative User Interface. This can be done from within the administrative interface or alternately through the title database.

Conspectus Integration

The Cache Manager can also be integrated with the Conspectus

  • Database. This allows authentication against the user list of the

Conspectus.
