PSLE - A Placement Exam

 Needs to reflect the relative achievement level of students within their peers.  Places students into different courses according to their academic ability  Enables posting to secondary schools by merit and as far as possible into a school of their choice.

slide-8
SLIDE 8

The PSLE Aggregate Score

It  Is a sum of scores that incorporates performance

  • f students in all 4 subjects

 Is not the raw scores of the subjects  Allows students to be ranked fairly

slide-9
SLIDE 9

Why we cannot use raw scores?

  • Different subjects have different levels of difficulty
  • For 1 subject many students may score around the

average mark while for another many may score above or below the average mark

slide-10
SLIDE 10

DOLLY

I scored 85% in both English and Mother Tongue ! H U R R A Y !

slide-11
SLIDE 11

Dolly’s Example:  Dolly scores 85% in both EL and MT at the PSLE  The average marks for MT of all students who took the PSLE is 80%.  The average marks for EL of all students who took the PSLE is 60%.

slide-12
SLIDE 12

Dolly’s Example  Comparing her results with other students who took the PSLE  Dolly’s MT marks are very close to the others; Dolly’s EL is higher than the others  Therefore Dolly did better in EL compared to MT.

slide-13
SLIDE 13

A need for standardisation

  • f the raw scores

Transformed Score or T-Score

slide-14
SLIDE 14

What is T-Score?

 It gives the relative position of a student’s performance as compared to the performance of all the other students in that subject  The raw mark obtained in the exam only shows how good the student is in that subject, not how good he is as compared to others

slide-15
SLIDE 15

How is T-Score calculated for each subject? where X: student’s mark for the subject Y: average mark (mean) scored by all students Z: spread of marks around the average mark (standard deviation)

Z Y)

  • (X

10 50 T + =

slide-16
SLIDE 16

Example:  Student’s mark (X) in exam = 50.0  Average mark (Y) scored by all students = 68.0  Spread of marks (Z) around the average mark (Y) = 14.0 T = 50 + 10 (50 - 68.0) 14.0 = 37.14

slide-17
SLIDE 17

How is the Aggregate Score calculated? By adding the T-Scores of the 4 subjects

slide-18
SLIDE 18

Example: Subject Total Mark T-Score EL 200 105 34 CL 200 152 51 Maths 100 67 53 Science 100 58 47 Aggregate T-Score 185

slide-19
SLIDE 19

Finally, all students are ranked according to their Aggregate Scores

Education & Career Guidance Portal (ECG Portal)

  • Parents played a key role in influencing their child’s
  • decision. It is important for parents to be involved in

their child’s education and career development by guiding them when they made decisions.

  • The ECG portal will be a fun tool children could

conduct research with their parents and this would help both parties in gathering information.
