  1. Talk for Primary 6 Parents Friday 25 January 2019

  2. Programme • Preparation for PSLE • PSLE T-score • Selection of Secondary Schools

  3. PREPARATION FOR PSLE Teachers  identify important content and finish syllabus by Term 2  give students lots of practice  PSLE style questions  past-year PSLE questions / questions from other schools  give rememdial/supplementary lessons

  4. PREPARATION FOR PSLE Parents can  Support the teacher’s approach and programme  expect there will be a lot more homework esp for P6  Support the remedial/supp programme

  5. Parents’ support • Encourage your child to aim high and be there when they don’t do well or are discouraged • Set goals with your child • Punctuality and attendance • Ensure your child has a proper study place at home and encourage him / her to complete all homework • Ensure your child has the habit of doing his / her own revision

  6. PSLE T-score

  7. PSLE - A Placement Exam  Needs to reflect the relative achievement level of students within their peers.  Places students into different courses according to their academic ability  Enables posting to secondary schools by merit and as far as possible into a school of their choice.

  8. The PSLE Aggregate Score It  Is a sum of scores that incorporates performance of students in all 4 subjects  Is not the raw scores of the subjects  Allows students to be ranked fairly

  9. Why we cannot use raw scores? • Different subjects have different levels of difficulty • For 1 subject many students may score around the average mark while for another many may score above or below the average mark

  10. H U R R A Y ! I scored 85% in both English DOLLY and Mother Tongue !

  11. Dolly’s Example:  Dolly scores 85% in both EL and MT at the PSLE  The average marks for MT of all students who took the PSLE is 80%.  The average marks for EL of all students who took the PSLE is 60%.

  12. Dolly’s Example  Comparing her results with other students who took the PSLE  Dolly’s MT marks are very close to the others; Dolly’s EL is higher than the others  Therefore Dolly did better in EL compared to MT.

  13. A need for standardisation of the raw scores Transformed Score or T-Score

  14. What is T-Score?  It gives the relative position of a student’s performance as compared to the performance of all the other students in that subject  The raw mark obtained in the exam only shows how good the student is in that subject, not how good he is as compared to others

  15. How is T-Score calculated for each subject? (X - Y) = + T 50 10 Z where X: student’s mark for the subject Y: average mark (mean) scored by all students Z: spread of marks around the average mark (standard deviation)

  16. Example :  Student’s mark (X) in exam = 50.0  Average mark (Y) scored by all students = 68.0  Spread of marks (Z) around the average mark (Y) = 14.0 T = 50 + 10 (50 - 68.0) 14.0 = 37.14

  17. How is the Aggregate Score calculated? By adding the T-Scores of the 4 subjects

  18. Example: Subject Total Mark T-Score EL 200 105 34 CL 200 152 51 Maths 100 67 53 Science 100 58 47 Aggregate T-Score 185

  19. Finally, all students are ranked according to their Aggregate Scores

  20. Selection of Secondary Schools

  21. THE SECONDARY COURSES  Express Course  Four year course  Students study English, Mother Tongue & a range of other subjects  If the student has done well in MT, can opt to do HMT

  25. S1 Posting Method By Choice 6th 1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th 285 284 FULL FULL 263

  26. After 6 choices…… Group up Posta tal District rict Posta tal Distric rict

  27. BONUS POINTS FOR ADMISSION TO SAP SCHOOLS  Top 30% students who pass Higher Chinese Language will be given bonus points for admission to the Special Course in the SAP schools.  Bonus Points:  Distinction 3  Merit 2  Pass 1

  28. Direct-School Admission (DSA)  Secondary schools such as  Integrated Programme Schools  Independent Schools  Autonomous Schools  Schools with specific ALP/LLP (Niche)  Allowed to take in a certain percentage of students before they take the PSLE exams

  29. Direct-School Admission (DSA)  These secondary schools set their own criteria such as academic results, CCA achievements and certain skills and talents, etc.  School will inform the students when the DSA exercise starts and parents and students must apply on their to the different schools.

  30. Education & Career Guidance Portal (ECG Portal)  An MOE ECG Portal to all Primary Schools  The ECG primary Portal is meant for Primary 5 and 6 students  The portal aims to create greater awareness about career options as well as educational pathways available to the students

  31. Education & Career Guidance Portal (ECG Portal) • Students could explore information featured in the portal through • colourful illustrations and personalised avatars • a series of fun and interactive games that would help them discover more about their strengths, interests and values in relation to the world of work. • There is also a “Find your favourite school” search function that allows students to search for and compare schools that matched their desired criteria such as CCAs, aggregate scores and locations.

  32. Education & Career Guidance Portal (ECG Portal) • Parents played a key role in influencing their child’s decision. It is important for parents to be involved in their child’s education and career development by guiding them when they made decisions. • The ECG portal will be a fun tool children could conduct research with their parents and this would help both parties in gathering information.
