  12. Role Of A Parent • To protect and nurture our children to survive and thrive in this ever changing world • To support and help them to make the right choices in their lives by inculcating good, strong moral values and independent living

  15. The Stages of Development • All children go through developmental “ stages ” and domains • Some typical changes in the areas of  speech and language development,  physical development,  social and emotional development  behaviour

  16. Sequence Of Stages • Development occurs in a sequence of stages that can be predicted. • The stages build upon one another proceeds toward greater complexity. • The stages are inter-related. 16

  20. So………, • Parents should ensure they provide their children experiences that shape their  values  motivation  approaches to learning  growth and development • Parents must ensure their child has a family that is has strong family relationships

  21. • Parents must provide their child with a safe, supportive and inclusive family environment • Parents should teach their child self-regulation ( a child’s ability to manage their behaviour and includes the ability to focus and to control impulses) • Parents must help their child develop healthy social relationships

Challenges Faced By A New Primary ry 1 Student • New physical environment • Few or no friends • New routines • New roles and responsibilities • More teachers & non-teaching staff to interact with • Longer curriculum hours (longer morning hours, some afternoon) • More subjects to learn • More activities, homework, projects to carry out

  24. What Parents Can Do To Help Their Child (1) Routine and habits • Have sufficient sleep (8 hours) • Wake up early so there is time to dress, eat breakfast and come to school on time • Eat a good breakfast • Set up a after-school routine e.g. bathe, do homework, play

  25. What Parents Can Do To Help Their Child (2) Create a study area at home (3) Purchase all necessary back-to-school supplies (4) Teach your child socio-emotional skills • Social skills • Independence • Concentration • Listening • Communication

  33. (1) No Exams for P1 Gan Eng Seng Primary School • No weighted assessments for P1 and P2 with effect from 2019 • Non-weighted assessments for P1 and P2 starts in Term 2. • Not more than 2 non-weighted assessments per Term per subject Gan Eng Seng Primary School

(2) Holistic Developmental Profile (HDP) Gan Eng Seng Primary School • Feedback to parents will be given in the form of checklists and/or qualitative descriptors (Beginning / Developing / Competent) for the achievement of specific Learning Outcomes based on subjects and your child’s learning orientation. • E.g. LOs on Writing (i) Demonstrate writing readiness and handwriting skills such as letter formation, placement, sizing and spacing. (ii) Write a simple paragraph of at least 3 sentences to recount appropriately sequenced events. Gan Eng Seng Primary School
