Workshop Aim ims

@HeadStartKent #headstartmatters

  • HeadStart is about building sustainability in Swale

and we can only do this by involving our local partners in the design and delivery.

  • We want you today to go away with a good

understanding of HeadStart, knowing how you can be involved, and with some practical tools to use after today.

Pre Workshop Questions

  • Please take a couple of minutes to complete the pre

workshop questions on your table. They are meant to be your first thoughts.

  • We are asking you these questions to help us evaluate

whether we have improved your knowledge about HeadStart by the end of this workshop. We will ask you the same questions again at the end. This will help us design and improve our future workshops.

HeadSta tart Kent t Mis ission Sta tate tement t and Goals ls

There is always someone for me to talk to

By 2020 Kent young people and their families will have improved resilience, by developing their knowledge and lifelong skills to maximise their own and their peers’ emotional health and wellbeing; so to navigate their way to support when needed in ways which work for them.

Young People

  • Coproduction is a requirement of the Big Lottery – everything we do must be in

partnership with young people.

  • SpeakOut @HeadStart very active: Locally in Swale as well as centrally in Ashford.
  • Young people continue to play a key role having been involved in the recruitment,

commissioning and social marketing of the programme.

  • Coproduction is the responsibility of all our partners.
  • Resilience passports based on the 6 resilience domains have been developed

and are currently being evaluated by young people.

Resilience Domains. See Gilligan (1997) and Daniel and Wassell (2002).

School staff in all HeadStart schools across Swale as well as many community partners have been trained in having Domains Based Conversations. In liaison with Early Help, additional intensive training has been given to pastoral teams at some schools where conversations are now underway.

How HeadSta tart Kent fit its wit ithin Early Help lp

@HeadStartKent #headstartmatters Senior Early Help Worker for HeadStart in Swale Cases received via EHN then intensive 1-1 support provided for families and young people:  Aged 10-16 and attend a HeadStart Swale school  Current or historic exposure to domestic abuse  Possible emotional and mental health difficulties Domains based conversations used with the young people I work within these Early Help cases. NOTE: The domains tool can be used when having any conversation with any young person, not just with an Early Help case. NOTE: The domains tool can be used when having any conversation with any young person, not just with an Early Help case. It can be used alongside Early Help or other procedures as the benefits found are universal

What t next? t?

@HeadStartKent #headstartmatters

  • 1. Focus on greens first. What is going well

in their lives? Why did you put green for there?

  • 2. Gradually move on to amber and reds –

ask why they chose that colour. This may happen organically or you may need to ask further questions.

  • 3. Ask what would make a ‘red’ better? –

These help form the wellbeing goals.

  • 4. Go back to green to finish on a positive.
  • 5. For an Early Help case this helps

complete the Family Assessment.

Benefit its of Domains Based Conversati tions

@HeadStartKent #headstartmatters

An accessible, visual representation of their lives through the domains. Extra information given. (Particularly with young adolescents who struggle with communicating their feelings) Better suited for adolescents than the “three houses” - the domains tool offers an excellent alternative. Not designed to create more work!

Domains Acti tivity ty

@HeadStartKent #headstartmatters

1. You would normally have the young person with you but for now, think of a young person you’ve spoken to or worked with recently – remember to keep the young person and their family anonymous. 2. With what you know, RAG rate at least one of the domains for this young person. (You may need to use your professional judgement) 3. Once you’ve got a completed domain, discuss how you would use this tool to start and finish your conversation with the young person. 4. Discuss how you could use Domains Based Conversations within your own role/organisation?

How could you help lp Logan?

In your current role or organisation, do you have any opportunities to support Logan at any point of his HeadStart journey? Please discuss this on your table before feeding back. For example:

  • PIAS – Attend meeting with Mum and Logan at school re. attendance concerns
  • SATEDA – Support programmes available for Mum, Logan and/or younger brothers
  • Open Access workers – Links Logan with other community groups, e.g. scouts / faith

groups and their safe spaces
