  2. Overview • In March 2010, the Library received a BookScan station from Continental Copy Products, Inc. to be used as a pilot. Within a month, there were approximately 600 scans executed on the station. • In 2011, the Library applied for a Sustainability Grant to purchase the BookScan station permanently, which was installed in August 2011. Statistics taken in October of 2012 showed that there were approximately 75,000 scans executed on the station.

  3. Overview, continued • In 2012, we acquired 3 more BookScan stations. During 2013, we acquired 1 more BookScan station bringing our total to 5. • From installation to October 1, 2013, we have had approximately 372,000 scans on all 5 of the BookScan stations.

  7. But what about the numbers?? BASED ON: • 1 box = 50 lbs • 1 ream = 5 lbs • 500 sheets = 1 ream of paper • Retail estimate of $4.25 per ream WE’VE SAVED: • 74 boxes of paper • 744 reams of paper • 3720 lbs of paper • $3162 not spent on paper

  8. Unknown Variables • Wear and tear = repair costs for copier per ream • Amount of toner used per ream

  9. Costs for additional BookScan stations Based on quote provided on 3/20/2013 • $6,595 Total – $4,995 per unit • $3,000 for the touchscreen computer and software • $1,995 for the bookedge scanner – $1,500 for 3 years of maintenance Based on a quote provided on 5/18/2013 • $400 for 1 year of maintenance (with 10% discount)

  10. What if we charged for use? • We would need to have 131,900 scans to recover the cost & maintenance for each BookScan based on a $0.05 per scan model with a total cost of $6,595. • Based on the performance of the first Bookscan station we received, that number could be reached in about a year and a half on the other 5th Floor BookScan station.

  11. What if we charged? continued • Considering the lower numbers on the BookScan stations on 4 and 6, I'd estimate 2 years for the 4th Floor and about 2 1/2 - 3 years for the 6th floor. • We believe, though, that charging for scans would stop the current exponential growth we’ve experience with the current model.

  12. Any Questions? • Please ask! We’ll try our best to answer.
