Problem - Limited Options

Current m ethods for installing branch connections:

  • 1. PE hot tapping
  • 2. Installing 3-Way Tees
  • 3. Installing High Volume Tapping Tees

3-Way Tee

I nstalling a 3 -w ay tee provides no flow restriction, how ever gas m ust be stopped using squeeze-offs.

Disadvantages:

 Temporary bypass may be needed, adding labor and material cost.  Potential damage to PE at squeeze points, decreases pipeline integrity.  Larger excavations increasing reinstatement cost.  Lifting equipment to maneuver squeeze off tools in place.  Squeeze-off may not completely stop the gas.

HVTT

Disadvantages:  Only available in 2” and smaller  Does not have enough flow compacity for larger projects. The high-volume tapping tee (HVTT) is one of the easiest fittings to install a lateral connection.

PE Saddle Hot Tapping

Disadvantages:  Multiple steps required.  Typically performed by a specialty trained crew.  Requires a large excavation.  Connection between new pipe and valve cannot be pressure tested prior to energizing the new lateral.

Hot tapping through a branch saddle uses specialized equipment.

Supraflow Solution

2010 - Developed by Grupo Torre in Barcelona, Spain, a 136 year old company.

W hy?

  • In response to growing concerns in Europe over the lack of cost-

efficient large diameter PE hot tapping systems.

  • Safety issues over the potential damage that squeeze-off causes to

PE pipes. To Date…

  • Over 9,000 Supraflow tees have been installed World-Wide.
  • In use, approved or awaiting internal approval at National Grid,

Peoples Gas, PG&E, CenterPoint Energy, Detroit Edison, Ameren, Bay City Gas, Metropolitan Utilities, WE Energies and other US Utilities for branch connections up to 8″ diameters.

3 step closure design creates perm anent air tight seal. 1 . O ring on internal cutter seat acts as prim ary seal. 2 . Tw o additional o rings in the tee’s head. 3 . PE cap w ith o ring finish installation.

After tapping is com plete, cutter is w ithdraw n to the top of tee.
