Choosing Subjects

 Choosing 5th year subjects requires Research, Reflection and

Decision.

 Students need to consider the following:

Ability/Interests Careers Relevance Keeping options open Seek advice

slide-7
SLIDE 7
  • Choose subjects you have enjoyed to date and that

you do well in

  • Never pick subjects that your friends are doing – be true

to yourself and your interests

  • Subject choice should not depend on what teacher is

teaching a certain subject at Leaving Cert Level.

slide-8
SLIDE 8

How many subjects?

  • Students will be required to take 7 subjects.
  • The results from their best 6 subjects will be totaled to give them a

maximum of 625 points. (This includes the 25 bonus points awarded for Honours Maths)

  • Students are required to take:
  • Irish
  • English
  • Maths
  • A third Language is strongly recommended….. Why?
slide-9
SLIDE 9

Irish

  • H4 in Irish is required for the following courses:

3rd Language

  • There are currently 171 Courses that require a third language.
  • There are however over 1300 Courses that do not require a third

language.

  • Many of the science, engineering and nursing courses in the NUI

Colleges have removed the third language requirement – however it is still a requirement for Medicine and Pharmacy and the Health Sciences such as Occupational Therapy.

  • If a student has an exemption from a third language e.g. dyslexia

and a report then the exemption carries over once the college has been informed.

  • Advise you to look at the following website to check out in

greater detail.

Don’t make rash decisions Subject choice should not depend on what teacher will be teaching a certain subject at Leaving Certificate. Neither should it depend on rumours as to what is an ‘easy’ subject. Keep in mind that if you are seeking high points you will need to choose the subjects you feel you can do best in.

slide-43
SLIDE 43
slide-44
SLIDE 44

It is important to have a

substitute choice that

you have researched and that you are happy with should one

  • f your choices prove not to be

feasible. Your school has also to put choices in various groupings so you may find that two of your chosen subjects are in the same group and you may only choose

  • ne of them. So the message is be

aware of any potential difficulties that may arise.

slide-45
SLIDE 45

Subject Level After choosing the subjects you now need to start thinking about the Level:

Choose Higher Level if you can – Try it for a while you can always go back to Ordinary Level.

slide-46
SLIDE 46

BONUS POINTS FOR HONOURS MATHS

  • If you achieve an H1 H6 in

Honours Maths you will be awarded 25 CAO Bonus Points.

QUESTIO ESTIONS NS TO ASK K MYSELF: If you can answer yes to all of these questions then you have chosen your subjects wisely and you can be confident that you have made an informed decision. Have I chosen subjects that I am interested in and that I enjoy? Have I checked to make sure that I am choosing the right subjects for the right career e.g. I must have a science subject e.g. Biology if I want to become a nurse. If my career choice is to change have I left my

  • ptions open…i.e. science / language?

Have I chosen a European Language? Have I spoken to the Guidance Counsellor / subject teacher about any questions I had? Have I checked www.qualifax.ie : subject choice section? Have I made this decision for myself and not been influenced / persuaded by friends?
