Charge The Eviction Reduction Subcommittee will hold meetings and take steps to reduce the number of preventable evictions within Arlington County by:  Conducting research, gathering data, and recommending actions to reduce evictions  Coordinating efforts to reduce evictions with Arlington County staff and other relevant commissions  Coordinating with the Campaign to Reduce Evictions and other nonprofit or advocacy organizations  Providing regular updates to the TLC

  3. Highlights  Established March 13, 2019  Meetings:  April 8 th and May 6 th  June 24 th and July 22 nd  Commissioners on subcommittee:  Kellen MacBeth (Chair)  Matthew Whitfield (Public)  Bismah Ahmed (Landlord)  Zachary Butler (Public)  David Timm (Tenant)  Other representatives on subcommittee:  Department of Human Services (DHS)

  4. Education & Outreach  Subcommittee has coordinated the following:  Establishment of an Eviction Prevention webpage for Arlington County (May 2019)  Research from other jurisdictions and best practices to prevent evictions especially among landlords of small properties  Development of a survey by the Northern Virginia Apartment Association (NVAA) and the Apartment & Office Building Association of Metropolitan Washington (AOBA) to gather additional data about evictions in Arlington

  5. Eviction Prevention Programs  Subcommittee has coordinated the following:  Presentation from AHC Inc. on their Eviction Prevention Program

  6. General District Court (GDC) Proposal  Subcommittee has coordinated the following:  Participation of DHS, Department of Community Planning, Housing, and Development (CPHD), and Legal Services of Northern Virginia in development of eviction reduction proposal with 3 parts:  Participation of Arlington’s GDC in Virginia’s Eviction Diversion Pilot Program  Scheduling all 1 st hearings for evictions on the same day of the week so DHS, Legal Services, and other groups can better support tenants at the courthouse  Attachment of a 1-page eviction prevention resources guide to all eviction notices

  7. Next Steps  Present the Eviction Reduction Proposal for the GDC to the TLC for approval on September 11 th  Invite APAH and Wesley Housing Development Corporation to present on their eviction prevention programs  Work with AHC and other stakeholders to develop best practice guide for landlords to prevent evictions  Work with CPHD to populate new Eviction Prevention webpage with available resources  Continue working with NVAA and AOBA to send out survey to landlords to gather eviction data
