Strukto is a structural and geotechnical engineering practice based in Sofia, Bulgaria, founded in 2003. Strukto is an independent group of engineers and designers, offering professional services related to buildings design. Since 2003 Strukto team has constantly grown and today is comprised of 15 Master of Science engineers, specialized in the field of reinforced and post-tensioned concrete, steel structures, seismic design and BIM (Building information modeling). Strukto provides a full range of engineering services for buildings projects. The types of projects include high-rise buildings, hotels, residential buildings, shopping centers, mixed-use buildings, convention centers, sports facilities, industrial buildings, special structures, educational and health centers. We prepare our projects using wide range of world languages (English, Spanish, Russian, German, Bulgarian and Romanian) and design codes (ACI, British Standard, Eurocodes, SNIP, etc.). Essential part of our work is covered by the BIM techniques using cutting edge technological platforms. Strukto incorporates BIM in the pre-design and design development stage of each project to achieve undeniable benefits for designers, contractors and owners. The information contained within our coordinated BIM models enables richer analysis than traditional processes and created in one phase of project life cycle can be passed to the next for further development and reuse.

Structural Engineering – We provide a full range of structural engineering services for buildigns – from the most complex Finite Element Method analyses to detailing and production of shop drawings for reinforced concrete, post-tensioned concrete and steel structures. Geotechnical Engineering - We provide geotechnical designs for foundations (shallow, pile and combined piled raft foundations), retaining structures (diaphragm walls, soldier pile walls, secant and contiguous pile walls, cantilever and gravity walls) and underground structures using “top-down” construction method. We begin our designs with the simple classical methods and gradually proceed to the more advanced Finite Element Method analyses. Finite element modeling
Building Information Modeling – BIM is an essential process to all aspects of the construction of a building, from the design, the estimating, the supply chain, the delivery of goods during the build, the construction process, the resource allocation, the productivity requirements to meet targets and to the post-handover phase through Facilities and Asset Management. Strukto incorporates BIM in the development of each project to achieve undeniable benefits for designers, contractors and owners: improved overall project quality, reduced conflicts and changes during construction, improved review, coordination and collaboration, lower risk and better predictability of outcomes, faster drafting without loss of quality, optimization of schedule and cost; Seismic Engineering – High seismic activity of Balkans (Bulgaria, Romania, Greece) is a key factor which allowed us to develop a great seismic engineering expertise, with emphasis in high- rise buildings. Each building in this region, from 2 level Muzeiko (Children’s Museum of Sofia) to 47 stories Sky Fort Tower, requires detailed seimic evaluation and detailing; Performance Based Design – PBD is an international design approach based on state of the art structural engineering. As opposed to traditional design approach, the performance based design explicitly evaluates the seismic performance of the structure under a series of nonlinear dynamic analysis to ensure the expected performance are met; Site Supervision – Success of each structural or geotechnical project is entirely dependent on the authors’ supervision at the construction site. We are constantly visiting our projects sites and inspecting each vertical element or slab, as it is strictly required by the law in Bulgaria. Our job doesn’t finish in the comfortable offices, but continues on the construction sites, supporting the contractors during the entire construction process.

The key to enabling of BIM aspects is the technological platform. Strukto uses top of the line technologies such as REVIT and TEKLA, thus allowing creation of models that meet the detail requirements for up to LOD500 (level of development). Level 2 BIM is the minimum standard set to achieve. Sharing of information is carried out seamlessly through Industry Foundation Classes (IFC). We have more than 10 years of experience utilizing Building Information Modelling technology in the structural design process. We rely on the BIM platform which provides great compatibility between different parts of the design – Architecture, Structure, MEP and other disciplines. Connection with the architects provided by REVIT is supplemented by TEKLA and ALLPLAN to form a unique BIM TRIO which is capable of covering stringent Client’s requirements in each point of the world. Our advanced engineering software platform and in-house software development facilitate the design of innovative structural solutions with complex geometry and large scale. It is a standard practice for each project to produce full 3-D virtual model of the building structures. Drawings, including plans, elevations, details, and perspectives, are produced and extracted directly from the model. Coordination with other disciplines is improved through the use of these models and through automated clash detection. The 3-D model also allows direct communication with model data to structural and geotechnical engineering design software packages. Accuracy and productivity are improved because all aspects of the structural system are managed in a single file. Despite the standard usage of IFC, we have developed custom software applications which exploit the API and scripting abilities for exchanging geometry and model data between REVIT, ETABS and PLAXIS (see Figure 3.1 below). Proximity of the adjacent Syndicate Tower set particular geotechnical challenges, because of the 22 m deep excavation needed for the Sofia record 6 basement levels of the new development. Top-down construction was selected as structurally adequate and feasible method for basements construction.
