STEAM Parent Open House at 6-7PM in the HS East Student Center

The STEAM Academy is the

integration of science, technology, engineering, arts and math using a school within a school approach. Students accepted into the program selected their STEAM school, which has a custom curriculum. One

  • f the many goals of the STEAM Academy is to foster

a love, appreciation and understanding of the subjects, so students are motivated to continue their studies outside of High School East. Each Academy teacher was selected to be a part of the STEAM TEAM because of their love for their subject matter and their love of teaching. Each teacher has something unique to provide to the Academy and ultimately every student in it.

What is LATIC?

Learner-Active, Technology-Infused Classroom (LATIC) is a learning method unique to the STEAM Academy and will be implemented throughout each class. One focus of LATIC is shift classrooms from teacher-driven to student-driven while using technology. By doing this, students take more ownership, accountability and responsibility for their learning, which means a greater connection to the content. Some of guiding practices of LATIC include collaboration, individual learning paths, and higher-order, open-ended problem solving. The Academy teachers received over the summer training on how to implement this new method for our students. The sophomores started with LATIC last year in their core classes and will continue with it this year. The freshmen are currently learning how to use this method and will also continue with it for the rest of the year in their core classes. Regardless

  • f grade, through LATIC students develop a felt need for learning while becoming global

citizens.

What are the STEAM Schools?

Environmental Sustainability is

  • ne of the three schools in the STEAM

Academy that focuses on the increasing attention to global environmental concerns, the impact on our daily lives. As students progress through this school, they will become active citizens in the world able to make educated decisions on topics such as pollution, carbon footprints and preserving natural resources.

Biomedicine, the second STEAM

school, focuses on the branch of medical science that applies biological and physiological principles. As students’ progress through this program, they will also become active citizens on topics such as understanding and treating human diseases, specialization within the human body and the applications of biomedicine in daily lives.

Engineering is the third school choice,

which focuses on the creative application of science, mathematics, and design. Once students progress through this school, they will have the ability to develop mechanisms needed to construct, operate and organize empirical evidence needed for innovation.

Meet the Freshmen STEAM Team

  • Mrs. Walters just started her eighth year at

High School East. She teaches STEAM English I and College Prep English. Her goal for the STEAM Academy is to foster a love of reading!

  • Mrs. Rose has been a Raider for eighteen years!

During that time, she has taught US History I & II, and World Civilization. The STEAM students have her for World Civilization, which is her favorite course to teach. Ms. Rose enjoys developing lessons that involve choice so the STEAM students can express their talents in history.

  • Mrs. Martz, a previous civil engineer for

seventeen years before joining the staff at High School East. During her eleven years as a Raider she has taught Algebra and Geometry, which she teaches for the STEAM Academy. Mrs. Martz finds teaching rewarding, especially when her students are enjoying math and learning its importance in the world.

  • Ms. Gregorek joined the staff of High School

East in 2012 as a biology teacher. During her time here, she has taught General Studies, College Prep, Honors and now STEAM biology. She hopes that her students develop an appreciation and understanding of biology that encourages their STEAM passions.
