Brownfields Assistance Program

▪ Empowers communities, developers, and stakeholders to assess, cleanup, and sustainably reuse brownfields. ▪ Provides free guidance and technical assistance throughout the brownfield redevelopment process. ▪ Assesses properties that are contaminated—or perceived to be contaminated throughout the state. ▪ Provides financial assistance (if available) to communities. ▪ Partners with the WV Brownfields Assistance Centers at WVU and Marshall University.

Voluntary Remediation Program

1980 Mid-1990s 1996

Congress passed the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA), in response to growing concerns over health and environmental risks posed by hazardous waste sites. This Act created strict liability for environmental contamination.
