In June 2016, over four hundred guests and equine enthusiasts gathered to celebrate the revival of Mars Essex Horse Trials, last held in 1998. The return of this renowned tradition is part of a strategic plan developed by community leaders and local equestrian organizations, aimed at revitalizing and growing premiere equestrian competitions in Somerset County and the surrounding region. Mars Essex Horse Trials is the first equestrian event, apart from Far Hills Race Meeting Association (FHRMA), to be held on Moorland Farm, a 230 acre estate at the cross-roads of Somerset, Hunterdon and Morris counties. In its 97th year, FHRMA draws over 40,000 spectators and has raised millions of dollars for health care in the region. The beautiful setting, perfect competitive conditions and family entertainment will make Essex a “must attend” event for spectators and professional and amateur
children’s activity tent sponsored by Willow School, “Horse Power”—a classic car show, tailgating on the hilltop and membership to the “Hoopstick Club” - a ring-side, all-inclusive two-day pass to the event. Best of all, Mars Essex Horse Trials will benefit the Greater Newark Life Camp whose mission is to provide an enriching day-camp experience for over 300 inner-city youth each summer. We hope you will join us on June 24 and 25, 2017 for what promises to be a great weekend in the country! Ralph Jones President Essex Horse Trials, Inc.

Eventing combines the elegance of Dressage, the thrill of Cross Country, and the precision of Show Jumping. At any level, eventing provides a rare opportunity for spectators of all ages to witness the unique trust and bond between horse and rider. Dressage: Gait, suppleness, and communication are tested through a series of prescribed, intricate movements. Cross Country: Horse and rider maneuver at high speed over a natural course of varied terrain and natural obstacles. Show Jumping: A sequence of

The Essex Horse Trials is the cornerstone of a strategic plan developed by community leaders and local equestrian
Far Hills Race Meeting Association, Inc. and Gladstone Equestrian Association (GEA). Their mutual goal is the revitalization and growth
competitions, events and clinics in the region.
For three decades, Essex was a must-attend competition for both U.S. and international eventers, drawing top riders and thousands of spectators. On June 24, 2017, Essex will make its new home at historic Moorland Farm in Far Hills, reviving the area’s long- standing equestrian heritage.
The Essex Horse Trials will be the first equestrian event, apart from Far Hills Race Meeting, to be held on the beautiful Moorland Farm Estate, 230 pastoral acres at the cross-roads of Somerset, Hunterdon and Morris counties. Far Hills Race Meeting, a world class steeplechase event celebrating its 96th year, attracts over 35,000 spectators to its private race course each fall.

The Life Camp movement began in 1887, when the original editor of Life Magazine founded the Life Fresh Air Fund to aid underprivileged children by sending them to the country for fresh air and sunshine. The Life Farm in Pottersville was first
country, something which they would otherwise not be able to experience. Today, LifeCamp provides a summer day camp experience for 300 Newark area youths per day for six weeks during the months of July and August. Campers are between the ages of 6 and 13, and come from the greater Newark public school system, as well as from Newark Charter School Programs (KIPP, Philip’s, North Star, Link, Newark Legacy and New Horizon). The LifeCamp campus is located on 90 acres of open fields, rolling hills, woodlands and the Lamington River. The campus is an effective teaching environment that makes learning enjoyable by providing experiential and contextual learning linked to the camp’s curriculum. The curriculum provides all campers with the opportunities to gain self- confidence and a sense of accomplishment as we continue to add and improve challenging and enriching opportunities. The overall LifeCamp program balances the arts, athletics and academic enrichment as well as personal growth and development, and is designed to help Newark’s youth become more confident in their abilities, improve their self-esteem, and foster greater autonomy and leadership qualities.
