EV Charging Technology Uptake

  • Early Adopters

– Favour innovation – Obliged to ‘trail blaze’ – Committed to Sustainable Development

  • Off-Grid Ambitious

– Use of multiple assets/behaviours to be as self-sufficient as practicable

  • Converted

– Savings ‘stack up’ – Proven technology – Popularity/credibility

EV Charging Technology Uptake

  • Early Adopters

– Standard 13A three pin plug socket charging system, some with access control (e.g. Elektrobay) – Generally located in built up areas

  • Off-Grid Ambitious

– Infrastructure has integrated energy management systems to:

  • Make the most of available power from onsite generation (e.g. Zappi with solar PV) to charge EVs
  • Avoid use of grid electricity during peak tariff periods (e.g. EVCI with battery storage)

– Generally located in less built up and more affluent areas – Type 2 sockets with charge rate limited to available capacity – typically 16-32A (3.7-7.4kW)

  • Converted

– More reliant on publicly available destination, en-route, and on-street EVCPs – Generally located in more affluent areas – wider socio-economic demographic than above

Challenges Facing the Public Sector

  • Responsibility for

– Deployment/provision - private sector / public sector? – Ongoing management

  • Cost

– Accessing available grants – Securing appropriate private sector finance agreements – Setting sensible user tariffs – Managing overheads

  • Functionality

– User experience – Future-proofing

slide-8

@jojusolar

Challenges Facing the Public Sector

  • Stakeholder Management

– Legal, parking, energy management, health and safety, communications, and facilities, (and planning and highways) personnel need to be involved – Incumbent contractors/service providers may be critical to the success of a project

  • Procurement route
  • Deployment strategy

– What, where, when, for who? – Contactless payment
