Who are we looking for?

The SME Instrument is valuable for European investors because it’s able to de-risk deep tech companies by validating their product on the

possibilities

39

slide-40
SLIDE 40

slide-48
SLIDE 48

Development until commercialisation:

  • takes 10 – 12 years and a lot of financial means

MAZARO’s financing (€ 3 M):

  • our own money and that of family
  • investor, private person
  • funding from Flanders (IWT/VLAIO) and Europe
slide-49
SLIDE 49

NCP Flanders

IWT: 4 x funding for a total of € 600 000

  • aim: funding projects that take 2 years and create jobs
  • MAZARO created only 1 job in 5 years

Next step: Horizon 2020 - SME instrument

  • the existing framework programs didn’t welcome SME’s,
  • nly consortia of corporates. In the automotive sector,
  • nly initiatives related to electrification were funded

Phase 1 (2015): € 50 000 to write a business plan, which was used as a basis for Phase 2.

slide-50
SLIDE 50

NCP Flanders

Phase 2 (2017-2019): € 2 M to demonstrate system in vehicle

  • includes business acceleration services (Phase 3):

12 funded coaching days, training sessions, partnering and networking events with other SME’s, corporates, investors, trade fairs.

  • valuable coaching from VLAIO advisors during the process:
  • detailed advice on how to write the application
  • financial advice on how to negotiate with investors,

banks, how to structure annual reports

  • assistance while searching a coach
  • insight in how the Commission

evaluates applications

slide-51
SLIDE 51

NCP Flanders

Experience and suggestions:

  • to win Phase 1 increases the chances
  • f winning a Phase 2 award
  • if your technology is world-class innovation,

don’t be modest and tell it in your application. Flemish seem to be less good in that than ES, UK, NL

  • we were assisted by a company that is specialized in

applying for EU funding. They know what to focus on, how the evaluators reason, they know the rules and procedures and how to submit

  • a free coach is great but to find a suitable one is not

easy

  • The Commission organizes a lot of events and websites

to find investors and industrial partners

  • applying is time consuming and evaluation can be

subjective. We were awarded on the 3rd trial, so: don’t give up!

SMEs in Horizon 2020

General info (1)

Horizon 2020 stimulates SME participation across the whole programme, but with a particular focus on close-to-market support. Development results need to be translated into innovation: great ideas need to be picked up by users, customers and the market and this is where SMEs play a vital role. Over 8 billion € out of the Horizon 2020 budget is expected to find its way directly to SMEs!

slide-69
SLIDE 69

NCP Flanders

SMEs in Horizon 2020

Societal challenges & Leadership in Enabling and Industrial technologies

SMEs can participate in any of the H2020 projects, but typically in those

  • f the Societal Challenges or the Leadership in Enabling and Industrial

Technologies programmes, providing specialized

technology/knowledge and/or bringing the project results closer to the market.

SMEs in Horizon 2020

Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA)

  • Innovative Training Networks
  • > Supporting ‘early stage researchers’- > doctorate involving industry
  • > European Training Networks, European Industrial doctorates,

European Joint Doctorates

  • Research and Innovation Staff exchanges.
  • > Support is provided for the development of partnerships in the form
  • f a joint research and innovation project. This is aimed at knowledge

sharing via international as well as intersectoral mobility, based on secondments of research and innovation staff (exchanges) with an in- built return mechanism.

slide-71
SLIDE 71

NCP Flanders

SMEs in Horizon 2020

Future & Emerging Technologies (FET) Open

FET Open supports early stage science and technology research

exploring new foundations for radically new future technologies by challenging current paradigms and venturing into unknown areas. SMEs taking part in FTI or FET-Open are offered up to 12 coaching-days. Coaches will help the beneficiaries to progress over the life cycle of their innovation, from idea to proof of concept, to first pilot application and finally upscaling and expansion.

slide-72
SLIDE 72

NCP Flanders

SMEs in Horizon 2020

Fast track to Innovation (FTI)

Fast Track to Innovation (FTI) provides funding for bottom-up

proposals for close-to-market innovation activities in any area of technology or application. FTI’s aim: reduce time from idea to market, stimulate the participation of first- time applicants to EU research and innovation funding, and increase private sector investment in research and innovation. SMEs taking part in FTI or FET-Open are offered up to 12 coaching-days. Coaches will help the beneficiaries to progress over the life cycle of their innovation, from idea to proof of concept, to first pilot application and finally upscaling and expansion.
