SHARED context
- Places shaped by the industrial past and post-
industrial present – an opportunity to redefine these identities
- Mixed or limited relationship to the surrounding
landscape – a chance to reconnect
- Initiative fatigue – need to be rooted and
creative
- Strong senses of community and active
community groups at different stages of maturity – need to reflect and build upon local capacity
Shared approach
- A licence to dream – stimulating rich ideas
- Focus on community assets (not deficit model)
- Aim to empower and give control to
community
- Connect economic, social and environmental
issues
- Support local knowledge and aspirations with
appropriate technical expertise
- Continuous engagement with the
communities
Ways of working
- Open – sharing and learning together
- Respectful of different experiences and forms of
knowledge
- Inclusive – seeking to connect to marginalised
groups
- Rooted in and driven by the people and places
- Objectives to emerge from the discussions not be
set in advance
Project Success factors
- Reconnect people and landscape
- Empower the community – genuine voice and
control
- Generate ideas for new community use of
natural resources
- Propose options for management of
landscape for multiple community benefit
- Retain benefits within the communities
Re-claiming…what is needed to bring it about Re-visioning…how the future could be Re-membering…that which has been dismembered
