SHARED context

  • Places shaped by the industrial past and post-

industrial present – an opportunity to redefine these identities

  • Mixed or limited relationship to the surrounding

landscape – a chance to reconnect

  • Initiative fatigue – need to be rooted and

creative

  • Strong senses of community and active

community groups at different stages of maturity – need to reflect and build upon local capacity

slide-16
SLIDE 16

Shared approach

  • A licence to dream – stimulating rich ideas
  • Focus on community assets (not deficit model)
  • Aim to empower and give control to

community

  • Connect economic, social and environmental

issues

  • Support local knowledge and aspirations with

appropriate technical expertise

  • Continuous engagement with the

communities

slide-17
SLIDE 17

Ways of working

  • Open – sharing and learning together
  • Respectful of different experiences and forms of

knowledge

  • Inclusive – seeking to connect to marginalised

groups

  • Rooted in and driven by the people and places
  • Objectives to emerge from the discussions not be

set in advance

slide-18
SLIDE 18

Project Success factors

  • Reconnect people and landscape
  • Empower the community – genuine voice and

control

  • Generate ideas for new community use of

natural resources

  • Propose options for management of

landscape for multiple community benefit

  • Retain benefits within the communities
