Skills Development Scotland The skills web service for Scotland’s employers • Our Skillsforce is a web service developed by Skills Development Scotland (SDS) and partners to support Scotland’s employers • It provides employers with information on the skills support available from public sector organisations in Scotland, enabling them to quickly access the services they need

Skills Development Scotland What is a Modern Apprenticeship (MA)? • A work-based training opportunity for new or existing staff that is designed around the needs of your business. • MA’s provide the chance for an employee to achieve invaluable industry recognised accreditations whilst gaining work experience in a paid role. • The MA programme is open to any employee aged 16+ • Over 80 MA frameworks to choose from ranging from Accounting to Vehicle Maintenance • In most cases the Modern Apprentice will train for an SVQ at Level 2 or above relevant to that industry or sector. This will usually take between two and four years to complete. The training will also cover core skills including: • communication; • teamwork; • problem solving skills; • numeracy; and • IT skills.

Skills Development Scotland Funding Modern Apprenticeships Skills Development Scotland manage the funding to contribute towards the training element of the MA so that the employer does not have to bear the full cost. The priorities for SDS funding decisions are in line with Scottish Government policy imperatives, and at the time of publication are as follows: • Maximising jobs with training opportunities for young people by providing a contribution to meeting employer demand for 16-24 year olds; and • Maximising opportunities for the wider availability of higher level Modern Apprenticeships • For 25+ supporting the Scottish Government’s key sectors and other Frameworks Accounting Construction Oil and Gas Engineering Sea Fishing Business & Admin Management Financial Services Glass Industry Life Sciences Hairdressing

  7. Skills Development Scotland Flexible Training Opportunities Scottish businesses with 100 employees or less can apply for up to £5,000 towards employee training costs. Funding is available for up to 10 episodes of training per business. We will refund up to 50% of each episode of employee training up to a maximum of £500 for each episode of training. For example, if an episode of training costs £1,200 excluding VAT, we will refund £500. Skills Development Scotland SDS Employer Recruitment Incentives Legacy 2014 Employer Recruitment Incentive Employers can receive a £1500 grant payment for taking on a Modern Apprentice in the following frameworks: • Achieving Excellence in Sports Performance Level 3 • Active Leisure and Learning and Well Being Level 3 • Creative Levels 2 and 3 • Customer Service Level 3 • Facilities/Services Management Level 2 • Food and Drink Operations Levels 2 and 3 • Horticulture Levels 2 and 3 • Hospitality Levels 2 and 3 • Retail Levels 2 and 3 • T ravel Services Level 2 and 3 http://www.ourskillsforce.co.uk/recruit/employer-recruitment-incentive/

Skills Development Scotland SDS Employer Recruitment Incentives Employer Recruitment Incentive for Targeted Young People The ERI for Targeted Young People offers: Employers the opportunity to assist the transition of young people who are care leavers, ex-young offenders , young carers or have a disability and are aged 16-29 into sustainable employment, including undertaking a Modern Apprenticeship additional tailored support from an expert organisation to help the young person sustain this employment. Payments of £1,500 are available providing the young person sustains the employment.   10. Skills Development Scotland SDS Adopt an Apprentice Adopt an Apprentice and not only will your business benefit from a skilled trainee, but you will also receive a £2,000 incentive. Skills Development Scotland The Certificate of Work Readiness • Designed in response to employers requests for work ready young people • Work experience and employer assessment • Certificate signed off by employer to show that a young person has reached an employer defined standard • Cost effective for business ‘190 hour interview’ • Gives the young person an opportunity to gain invaluable experience and a qualification that will lead them towards employment

Skills Development Scotland Skills for Growth A fully funded programme in partnership with Investors in People Scotland targeted at businesses with ambitions for growth and who have between 5 and 250 employees. Aims to help the business: • Clearly identify their key business objectives • Match those objectives to the people and skills needs within their company • Provide them with an outline people and training action plan that is aligned to their specific business objectives • Make best use of their skills through effective leadership and management in terms of business and skills development • Identify appropriate training courses and maximise any public sector support that is available to them
